i rather have marko jaric... hes a good defender, with size... who doesnt mind passing first... hes also younger than AD.
ZHAO, PG spot is not a priority for the Rockets right now. AD is not a starter and there's a reason for it, namely the fact that he's too good of a scorer off the bench. That's not what we need. You don't just make roster changes "because". I like watching AD play, so I am not "dissing" AD or anybody else who wants him here. But picking players isn't done like fantasy leagues: in the real world, you make sure the player you are looking at fits into the equation. Right now, AD is just not needed. -P1st, S2nd
Based on what the Jason Terry was able to do against us in the playoffs, I'd say an quick athletic point guard like Daniels would be a welcome addition to this team.
No one is talking about Daniels playing 35 minutes a game. If he comes in here, he will probably split time with James. So being called "a starter" really doesn't carry much weight. The rockets will have a platoon once again this year. However, Daniels is a better basketball player than both Sura and James. And with that, i'd be for a move to get him here.
Because he is better than anything else out there including Duhon, and he has a lot of experience. We can't get Ridnour, we can't get Hinrich. Besides, most of our offense is going to come off McGrady. McGrady has the ball in his hands and makes decisions with it, similiar to MJ. BJ Armstrong and John Paxson weren't the classic dish it point guards. THey were great spot up shooters who hustled, played D, and knocked down the open shot, but had the ability to help MJ bring the ball up the floor and drive to the hoop when the lane was left open because of MJ. We do not need the classic Steve Nash point guard who dribbles, dribbles, dribbles, and then throws it or shoots it. McGrady needs to dribble and either pass or shoot it. The other thing that makes him more valuable to a team like Houston is what he brings to the table defensively that Ridnour doesn't bring. He defends his jock off on the perimeter. We need that to protect our big man. Seattle has a bunch of garbage men playing in the post. They don't care if they protect them or not. They'll just bring in another garbage banger off the bench. All they want is to get the ball to Ray and Rashard or have Ridnour break down the defense. We are built different than that. We want to get the ball to TMac and Yao. And we want to surround them with players who can defend and shoot. Ridnour can't defend, Nash can't defend. It won't work here. We want a highly efficient point who defends his butt off. AD fits that description the best. He could start for a lot of teams in this league. Just because he isn't starting in Seattle doesn't mean that he isn't starter material. Remember, Mutombo is still a top 7 center in this league. He could start and be an improvement over the previous starter for over half the teams in this league. AD is the same way. I'd take him over a lot of starting 1s in this league.
What Jason Terry did for Dallas does not mean Antonio Daniels would do the same for the Rockets. Jason Terry should be remembered as the the exception to the rule rather than the rule itself, namely that point guards with scorer's mentalities don't typically make good floor generals. For proof of this proposition, look at Jason Terry's stats before he came to Dallas.
I agree in principal, but not at the cost of not addressing our PF situation. If the choice is AD OR a PF who is worthy of heavy NBA minutes, we must pick the latter. Only after a S&T or a really confident draft (Simien, May, Diago) that addresses our 4 spot can we consider breaking into our MLE for AD or any other guard. If (trade/draft) that happens AD is one of the 1st calls I make but that is a BIG IF. Do put the cart in front of the horse.
Clearly the Rockets are interested in Daniels and have been trying to pry him away from Seattle for the last year or so. I think Daniels would be a great fit here in our guard rotation. Depending on what we do in the draft, where we are with Spanoulis and if we can make any other trades I definately think we should consider Daniels with our MLE.
He was #4 overall. The Grizzlies (yea, a terrific franchise before Jerry West) traded him at the end of the year. Chauncey Billups was #3 overall that same year. He was in Boston for all of about half a season before being traded. He didn't have the BB IQ, court vision, or handles to run an offense. That guy will never be a championship point guard. Damn, Daniels didn't start in front of Avery? A team with Avery as starting PG has no chance of winning a championship, right? Ridnour plays all of 4 more mpg than Daniels. Ridnour WAS a lottery pick. Daniels often plays the 4th quarter with Ridnour on the bench. What does that tell you? Not really. The Rockets were linked to Daniels earlier in the year, and posters here have been talking about adding him for over a year now.
Nike, He's still not a priority. My bet is that it's not gonna happen. AD is a bench player because he's a great bench player. If that's the capacity you'd like to see him play as a Rocket, okay. But he isn't starter material. Lots of teams take looks at lots of players. BFD if the Rockets looked at him...I would...but what posters speculate or wish for here on the BBS likely has little to do with what the Rockets intend. Avery Johnson, never a gifted PG, started in front of Daniels because AD lacked the mindset to run an offense. That is the straight-up truth. I mean, there's no doubt who the better athlete was, so why not start the better athlete unless brains beat braun. But I don't blame any of you for pumping up Daniels. He's had a great year, and AFTER YOU GUYS WATCHED THE SPURS LOSE LAST NIGHT YOU'VE GOT TO HAVE SOMETHING TO TALK ABOUT HERE!!! -P1st, S2nd
We need to get more out of T-Mac. 31PPG, 7RPG, 7APG, 1.5SPG, 1.5 BPG in the playoffs just doesn't cut it.
This is a crazy idea, this guy is a great bench player, but not as good as starter in PG. I don't have any interest in him.
Macfan, You are taking my statement totally out of context. We could get more out of TMac if he didn't have to handle the ball so much, even though he's already shown us what he can do. Plus, he would be less prone to hang around the perimeter. BTW, I look more to the 82 game regular season than I do a 7 game first round series. Tmac is great...I think he's a top 2-3 player in the NBA, but I'd still like to see how he plays without the ball. But, given that you just showed up here in 2005 and have a moniker inspired by T-Mac, I can see how any statement that T-Mac could improve would be construed by you as a slight against him. -P1st, S2nd
I am not defending T-Mac. I was just joking. I am not trying to make fun of your argument, I was just trying to be funny. The reason you see Reggie and Rip Hamilton work without the ball is because they're not good enough to break their man down one on one. They have to find alternative ways to score. Why would you play Mac off the ball? Good things happen when he has the ball. reggie and rip are one dimensional. To take advantage of T-Mac's supertalents, you have to give him the ball. He demands double teams, he has great vision and passing skills and you can't defend him one on one. He makes other players better. Don't confuse reggie's sissy moves for greatness. Magic and Michael touched the ball on 85% of the possesion. Good things happen when great players have the ball in their hands. They're wither going to score or they'll make their teammates better.
Macfan, I don't want Tmac to play like Reggie or Rip. But I do want to see him in the lane more, going to the hole and getting fouls. A point guard that would do give and gos and give and gives with Tmac would be nice. Tmac is streaky from deep, and sometimes he just seems to reliant on the three. We just need a floor general. I don't care if the ball is given to Tmac at halfcourt, but I don't want him handling the ball as if he's the PG. -P1st, S2nd
Agree. T-Mac got a little soft and discouraged (because of record) in Orlando last year so it took for him the whole year to recover his agresiveness (including going to the hole) and 48min energy. He got progressively more agressive this season. You'll see him shift focus a little bit and drive to the hole quite a bit more this coming year. Point guard play does not affect his ability to go to the hole, though. That's his own fault. Where a prototypical (passs first) point guard would help, is bringing the ball up the floor and start their offensive sets. If you listened to Steve Nash at the halftime of game 7, he said that the Rockets weren't getting in their sets early enough. Bobby is scrappy and tough, but how many unforced turnovers did he have (bringing up the ball, entry passes to Yao etc) and how many times did he end up with the ball at the end of the shot clock only to shoot airballs? Sura could probably play some 2 guard next season. I think he would be a great combo guard for us off the bench with his energy and toughness.
Exactly what I've been saying since the DAY we acquired him. Glad someone finally agrees. With all the praise Sura got this year, it was hard for me to bring the point up again for a while without getting flamed. I'd love AD here splitting time in the guard rotation.. except if he takes Wesley's spot as most people would like, that leaves Sura still starting. Not bad, but again, I think he'd be awesome off the bench at any of 3 positions
kaleidosky, If we all agree that AD isn't a starter, then I'm cool with him coming here to play off the bench. AD is better than Wesley in my book, and Wesley has started games for us, but that doesn't mean AD should start. That just means we are weak at the two, assuming that we call Tmac a 3. I did not particularly like seeing Sura and Wesley on the floor with TMac. Sura, Tmac, SUITABLE SG/SF -AKA WINGMAN, Howard and Yao would have been a lot better. But MacFan seems to say that AD is our answer as the STARTING PG, a notion I disagree with. -P1st, S2nd
I see AD as a player who now has more experience in the league and has learned to play within his limits. He could very well start with MJames and V.Spanoulis coming off the bench. Then if we can get DM we are set. Daniels Sura Tmac Yao DMarshall Awesome starting lineup
