Good stuff Clutch. I do think Marshall should be high on the Rockets list of people they should look at with the MLE. I know he is not quite as young as we all want at PF and perhaps not as athletic, but he is solid and would be a solid contributor to this team. His 3pt shot really would help our spacing.

The most likely pickup for the Rockets this off season will be Donyell Marshall. He shoots better than Padgent from 3pt land, and rebounds and plays better defense than Howard. Most importantly though, the Rockets can afford him.

too old. We need young legs and atheletism.

We might not be able to afford the "young legs and athelticism" that the MLE can buy. Maybe the only athelticism we can buy with the MLE is someone like Chris Andersen. Would you take him over Marshall?

We might not be able to get the "ideal" PF with our MLE. We might have to get someone a bit older. Maybe we get the "young legs" in the draft. Right now we just need to get someone of quality, even if they are 30 years old.

It can't be denied that his profile matches up almost exactly with the much-discussed "Van Gundy Type." That alone would seem to make him a frontrunner. If he could only average 9 boards a game and rotate defensively, I think he'd get a serious look. But add that 3pt. % and you know this guy's one they're keeping a close eye on.

Youth and athleticism ARE important to this team, but one thing JVG would hate to do is reverse last season's trend of getting smarter with every acquisition. Marshall is a guy that can be trusted not to make costly mistakes, and that's something very important to Van Gundy.

Although he is a definite upgrade in our PF, but he will only last us at most 3 years. I would rather have the younger PF, but of course it's easier said than done.

Thats why we should sign Donyell, then get an athletic PF in the draft (Simien). Then we have 2 "new" PFs, and we can package Howard and Sura together to get an athletic Guard.

I TOTALLY agree with you. Sign AND draft PFs (we can sign Marshall and draft Simien and I'd be MORE then pleased), then look to dump Howard and Sura for an athletic Guard.

However, while Marshall may want the money, his age (32) may make it tough for him to get a large commitment. Far lesser players (see: Cardinal, Brian) have gotten the full MLE, but they are also far younger and when the dust settles, the Rockets may look enticing to Donyell.

Nike or other capologists, can you figure out the maximize DM could be paid? It seems to me a 6 year 37 mill (full MLE) is not possible because he would be 37 & 38 the last 2 years (he will be 32 in a few days). But I don't know the actual figure or limits, I am guessing around a 4 year/23 mill (full MLE for 4 years), but it is a guess. If so this is great, because it would prevent ridiculas offers for him and a bidding war paying for years you know he can't produce. If a 4 year full MLE for about 23 mil is all most teams can offer, that is relatively appealling to me. I may change my tune a little bit about DM after all.

    47. What is the "Over-36" rule?

Suppose a player will play four more seasons before he retires, and he wants to play those four seasons with a team that can only offer him their Mid-Level exception. If they want to give the player more money than the Mid-Level exception would allow, then there is a potential loophole they could exploit by signing a contract for more years than they expect the player to play.

For example, suppose the Mid-Level exception is $5 million. With 10% raises, a four-year contract would total $23 million. But if they added a fifth year to the contract, the total salary would be $30 million. If the player retires after four seasons, as expected, and continues drawing his salary for the additional season, he will effectively be paid $30 million for four years' work. In essence, they are giving the player a four year contract, plus an additional year of deferred compensation.

This loophole is closed by the Over-36 rule.

Certain long-term contracts that extend past the player’s 36th birthday are deemed Over-36 contracts. In an Over-36 contract, the presumption is that the seasons at the end of the contract are likely to come after the player retires. Therefore, they are considered to be deferred compensation as described above. This is important because deferred compensation is charged to the salary cap in the year it is earned, not the year it is paid.

I don't think the Rockets should give Marshall anything more than a three year deal. Preferably make it a two year deal.

My only concerns are his age and the length of any contract he'd sign. At 32-33 yrs. old, do you want to be paying him a lot of money over a three-four year deal, when at the end of it he might not be very good anymore?

I was on the Donyell Marshall bandwagon when he played for Utah (I saw one of those games in the Compaq Center). But that was in 2000-2001.

I'm not adverse to getting Donyell now, but I do have my reservations.

If 4 years 23 mil is the most we can offer that is still around 22% less than we will be paying JH over the same period at the same age (JH is like 6 months older actually). I prefer SAR or Swift first at a 6 year MLE (or S&T for SAR), but DM (much more complete offensively) or Reggie Evans (much younger, more physical) at around 4/20mil are my next two options--I am not sure which I prefer of these two, depends on contract I guess. DM is the most similar to age and strengths/weakness as JH, but gives us another option with 3 range.

Marshall would be a nice pickup, expect a lot of playoff teams like Miami to go after him this offseason. I would still like to see the rockets pickup a nasty defensive enforcer type to team up with Yao and T-Mac in the frontcourt, someone that will throw the bodies in the grave so to speak ala Kurt Thomas. With Marshall or Howard the rockets sweep the Dallas series. I know the spurs had expressed alot of interest before the trade deadline for Marshall also.

Scar- You got it right as far as I can tell. Years 5 and 6 would have to be amortized over the first 4 years of the contract, but can't exceed the MLE amount, which basically would limit him to a 4 year deal.

I agree with Shady, though- I'd prefer not giving Marshall even a 4 year deal. 3 would be my limit.

I'm not as high on Marshall as some. Maybe I just have visions of him from his "Super Scrub" day. I don't see him as a guy that really goes to get rebounds.

I just checked some of his team numbers from his best rebounding years. Toronto was 3rd to last in team rebounds, but even worse- had a -5.15 rebound differential, by far the worst in the league. Toronto had an even poorer -5.5 rebound differential last year. His 02/03 Chicago team was outrebounded 2 per game. The 99/00 Golden State team (a sub 20 win team) was outrebounded .5 per game (though note, that team averaged 45.6 rebounds per game and was still outrebounded!

The two Utah teams were the only 2 playoff teams he's been on, were above average rebounding teams. His rebounding there was decent, not spectacular- and he was usually not playing the 4 (due to Karla).

His steals number is intriguing as a help defender, but I think his shot blocking is overrated. A guy like Swift can help alter an offense because teams are looking over their shoulder for him. Most wing players won't think twice going after Marshall, and his shot blocking saw a significant drop this year.

When dealing with contracts, keep in mind there is a good chance "length of contract" will be reduced with the new CBA. So all of us talking about 6 year deals might be irrelevant.

Talk is 4 years for another team's FA and 5 years for your own FA. So us, along with everyone else might only be able to give Marshall or Swift at most a 4 year deal.

Somone will give him a 4 plus year deal, someone, if not Rockets.
You have the rights not to offer him, he has the rights not to take your offer.

    SOLD!!!

Yeah after reading more about him, he seems like a better fit than SS and we could get him for less $$ if CD works his magic like this season.. Sounds good to me if we dont sign him for over 3 years, but I bet he gets a 4 year deal at his age..

Marshall can play either 4 or 3. We don't have real back for Tmac. The only thing that we can do while Tmac is not on the floor is play small ball. However, Marshall can play along with Howard.

Marshall does not need ball to be effectivie. I remeber his day in Utah he scored a lot of points by put backs.

He is good rebounder and even better offensive rebounder and he can finish the play.

He block a lof shots because of the long arm.

Well if the Rockets cant get Swift or SAR than Marshall would be my #3 choice in free agency for the PF spot. Like Nike said, 3 years is my limit for the length of his contract. For some reason I am just not too high on this guy but he is still an upgrade at the backup PF and SF spot over Padgett and Bowen.
