I know there is a Swift thread out there, and maybe I'll merge this, but since this is a new feature on the site that I want to continue over the next few weeks, I figured I would start a new thread. http://www.clutchfans.net/news.cfm?NewsID=1201
Great work. A lot of the points you bring up make me think that though he likely isn't ideal, given his age and athleticism, he *may* be the best bet, since many of his uncertainties will keep others away. When you consider, even with his disagreements with his coach, and only playing in 3 games, and only 16 minutes a game at that, he still nearly averaged 10 and 5 in the playoffs, which would probably have had us beating Dallas. In 25-30 minutes a game, I can see him getting 14 pts, 8 or 9 boards, which would be good. Plus, and we all know how important this is, he looks super-sweet in that Rockets red uni As an aside, it says 10.1 points, 4.6 points,...I'm guessing the second points should be rebounds.
I don't see Swift in a Rocket uniform. Like the article says, he is consistantly inconsistant. I'd pass, have a PF by committe again next year, and use our cap space in 2006 to make a run at Ben Wallace. Say no to Swift!
Clutch, An excellent article, certainly the first of many; thanks for filling our time with these insightful tidbits.
I'd take Swift over Spoon and Padgett for sure. SAR and Donyell...they are maybes too but rather old. Swift..I'd take a chance on him. I don't want Chris ANderson though. Tyson Chandler would be awesome..but not likely. btw I want to see a photoshopped Swift in Rockets uni edit: never mind he looks good! I am going to read the article now. btw in stats it says 10.1 points, 4.23 points..
Seems unlikely given the fact that Adonal Foyle got $41 million last year, Turkoglu got $42 million, and Etan Thomas got $42 million.
yeah i would pass on swift too. what we need is a player who clocks in and clocks out. i would prefer that we use our money to get SAR -- while unspectacular is solid and consistent, you know what youre going to get with this guy. while many argue that juwon howard is just that, SAR is an upgrade over juwon. i'd rather stay put with juwon as opposed to going after a swift or a kwame brown. and i definately wouldnt want to draft an undersized PF prospect (such as turiaf or simien) as this years draft is littered with them. id rather use our pick to get a solid swingman contributer for our bench. the draft is deep in that regard ... granger, graham, garcia, wright, winston, webster -- all these names outside of webster were all 3 year players in college and can be expected to contribute immediately (even webster is considered the most nba ready hs player) i pray that the rockets dont blow their pick on a foreign project player that ive never heard of.
Hakim Warick is pretty similar to Swift, so why don't we just draft him and dont worry about Stro......i don't know, i just have a bad feeling if we do sign Swift..i don't think he'll contribute as much as we would be paying him...........like clutch said, it might turn into a Mo Taylor contract down the road...
I was really glad to see something other than the Rockets final loss (now if we can just lose the score in the upper right hand ) on the opening page. More than that even, I like the idea of profiling potential Rockets and thought your article on Swift was well rounded and helpful to someone like myself who knows little of him. Looking forward to more.
Thank Goodness you took ELIMINATED off teh front page. I would get depressed everytime I came here. I like Strom, but I also like what someone mentioned in Battie.
I'm quite curious who CD has been referring to a few times when he said that there were a number of FAs who have expressed interest in coming to Houston. It seems management has a clear idea who they are interested in, and I wouldn't be surprised if TMac hasn't been working the possibilities behind the scenes. If Swift wanted to come here for the MLE, even though he could probably sign other places for more, in order to mature with a championship contender, I'd be interested. I'm not interested in bringing in guys who aren't a strong upgrade over Howard. Otherwise, we can just wait until we draft a PF this year, and see if he and Badiane provide what we need in the future. The thing I didn't like hearing, besides his inconsistency, is his lack of intelligence. Jerry West is probably the best there is in evaluating talent, and if he's willing to let him go for nothing, I'd be hard pressed to offer more than the MLE. If that happened though, I might get a little kick out of stealing someone away cheap, after what he did with us and Posey. I'm not sure I see him as our starting solution at PF, based on how he has played so far, but he could be valuable depth. Of course, if there is any possibility of getting Chandler, that's who I want.
Yeah..... that was a painful reminder everytime visiting the bbs. Now we can just look to the future instead of keep thinking of all the what if in that series.
I wanted Swift when he was playing well during a stretch in the regular season but I would be hesitant now because of his inconsistancy. A great addition Clutch. Thanks.
Wasn't Swift a huge Rockets fan growing up? I remember when he was being drafted that he told people in a work out that the Rockets were his favorite team. Then again, it's not like he lives or has family in Houston, so we probably shouldn't expect a hometown discount, but hime taking the MLE isn't too unlikely of a possibility.
The sad thing is the PF pool is not really that strong this year, that is there aren't many PFs out there that would nicely fit what the Rockets need in that position (toughness, tenacious D, can make the occasional jumper, can operate without the ball and without plays being called for him). Basically, we need a guy similar to a Jeff Foster type, or even oddly enough Cato type (although they can't make the jumper, they fill in nicely for the important stuff). Swift is a softie and a lazy guy, we get this guy on our team and we will be sorry for it, I can guarantee you that much. This guy seems to want not just big money, but an important offensive role for himself. I would much rather just settle for a defensive PF (even if he is a bit older) that works hard and tries his best, and won't b**** about his role/playing time etc. Say no to Swift, look for a trade to fill in the PF position for a season or two, just to buy you time until that right PF comes along. In fact, if we can't get a PF at all this offseason, I won't be too depressed about it, I would be fine with going with a PF by committee. If there is ONE thing I am really hoping for besides a PF this off season, it is a pass-first PG that can take the passing load off T-Mac and help him look for Yao more, because our inside game is eventually what will be the difference between making the playoffs and winning consistently in the playoffs. The league is only getting tougher and tougher, and teams have a lot more depth than we do, so we have to adjust accordingly if we want to be a consistent force in the playoffs for years to come (2 players just ain't enough anymore, the dynamics of the league have changed)
