A 45-win regular season is a 45-win regular season. This season was an accomplishment, but one is not defined as being a "winner" by getting to the first round.

I'd say winning 51 games after winning 45 is a success, and I'd say taking the Mavericks to 7 games is a success compared to last year.

Jackson is a cure-all....Houston has problems that can't be fixed only by coaching. I say first address those issues, and if JVG can't do it with clearly the right team, then you can call for his head.

But right now, this team just wasn't good enough, so don't blame the coach for a lack of talent. He milked as much as he could out of these guys....that says a lot.

I'm not "calling for his head." I am saying the Rockets should pursue PJackson, and if something can be worked out, JVG is the odd-man-out.

Sorry, JVG is not even a good coach, the management did almost an awesome work to bring so many players he wants here. What's the deference between this year and last year, not much! we still got beated in first round while there is a huge gap between lakers and Mavs.

On the other hand, he lacks strategy to utilize his players to the best. He lacks capability of controling players, which results so many bad shooting selections in this team. He has failed to realize that a champ team doesn't neccessarily have a long roster, we just need at most 8 very good players. He's also a hesitant person when comes to make decision on court, he couldn't make a quick decision to change game at right time.

All of above indicate that he will never be a champ coach! We may keep him if and only if we are not heading to champ. In that case, he saves money for the ownership.

    Your right (sic).

This year's Mavs won 58 games. Last year's Lakers won 56.

I know a team this year that collapsed at the end of this season. Meanwhile, the Rockets raced to the finish. I wonder if there's something, or perhaps, someone, in common?

edc- Jordan was 28 when he won his first title. Pippen was 25. Tracy is just about to turn 26 and Yao doesn't turn 25 till next season. A couple more years of seasoning for TMac and Yao just may do some wonders. Not to mention another offseason to build depth. You can't coach depth.

why would you want Phil? Phil Jackson wouldn't have beaten this Dallas team with the players we had either....and that's the point.

Geez, yall think PJ is a miracle worker...guess what - he LOST the last two years with the two best players in the game.

You think he's going to fare better with T-mac and Yao, and no one else?

JVG deserves one more year and one more free agent to prove his worth. If he still can't make anything happen after that, I'll consider PJ.

    STAN VAN GUNDY!

If Miami Heat win this year then we know we have to bring in Stan VanGundy. I agree with whoever said the thing about JVG not having as good of players as PJ over the years.

    Points to make:
-Did hear a lot of criticism of some of the plays JVG used/or could have used in the playoffs from some old pros.

-All those 220+ players/or ex-players voting JVG the second worst coach may say something as well.

-Some people on this team are drawing extremely negative vibes with the officiating. Rox could have won the 1st round. I am sure the BS officiating effected them in the games they lost or won for that matter (except Game 7). Now JVG (Yao already is) is a target to be picked on by the refs. Something still must be done with those refs. A fresh face could change this. I remember MJ pushing people how out his way to win games and to make the winning shot.

-I think JVG has done some brilliant coaching as well and he has gained the respect of the players and fans.

JVG was involved with rebuilding this team mid-season & still coached it to a 51 wins. I'd like to see what he can do with this team & a tweek or 2.

...and collapsed after two games of a playoff series, tying or surpassing several negative NBA accomplishments.

There is a very good chance Phil Jackson will not be available in a year. You want him, you try and get him NOW or not at all.

    How do you know that?

Given past history, I think it is safe to say a Phil Jackson or Rudy Tomjanovich coached team would not have come out and spit-up all over the floor the way the JVG-led Rockets did in Game 7.

Possibly, look at how much T-mac has grown under van-gundy. Instead of looking at his failures, can't you see what he has accomplished?

Do you drop someone who's doing a great job because you think someone else MIGHT do a better one? No way...that's silly.

You obviously know no basketball if you cant see JVG is a good coach he has way better defense than any PJ team and by the way PJ is good because of Michael Tex Shaq and Kobe who is JVG labeled with hmm...an 8th seed to the nba finals only to lose to the Spurs and oh by the way the best player on the Knicks that year was Allen Houston no top 10 player, just a good player.

I don't think there is a ready made situtation for Jackson this summer. I have a feeling he won't sign anywhere, unless JVG is forced out, which no longer looks like the case. If the refs are extremely biased next season, JVG could retire, and I could see Jackson stepping in. Otherwise, I think this is a next summer issue ... JVG is a folk hero in Houston right now, and his players say they love him and he's the best coach they've ever had. I don't see any way that JVG would be replaced this summer, even if Jackson came begging, which he'd never do.

It's not that the Knicks aren't interested in Phil Jackson. It's a question of whether he is interested in them.

Nearly three weeks have lapsed since Knicks president Isiah Thomas met with Jackson in Los Angeles. Although Thomas hoped to have a second meeting, it is believed that no meeting has taken place or been scheduled as of yet.

An offhand comment by Thomas earlier this week might be the best indication of the Knicks' fading prospects of landing a coach with nine NBA titles. While in Los Angeles for undisclosed reasons, Thomas ran into former Lions quarterback Rodney Peete at the Four Seasons hotel valet parking stand. Peete, who played in Detroit when Thomas played for the Pistons, asked if the Knicks were going to hire Jackson.

According to Peete, who is a panelist on Fox Network's "Best Damn Sports Show Period," Thomas shook his head no and indicated it won't happen. A person familiar with Thomas said his fleeting conversation with Peete merely was a polite response. No determination about Jackson's candidacy for the job still held by interim coach Herb Williams has been made, and the Knicks have not ended their pursuit of Jackson.

The fact is that Jackson has not yet expressed serious interest in the Knicks' job. Although he hasn't had a formal negotiating session with the Lakers, Jackson has had several informal meetings with Lakers owner Jerry Buss and general manager Mitch Kupchak. He also has a romantic relationship with Jeanie Buss, the owner's daughter, and he often lunches at the team's training complex.

One person who talks regularly with Jackson said: "I don't think he's made up his mind if he wants to coach or not. I think that's still the number one problem as far as he's concerned ... He's still trying to decide what he wants to do. Not necessarily where he wants to go, but what he wants to do."

Besides the Knicks and Lakers, Jackson reportedly also has been contacted by the Blazers and Kings. Only Sacramento made the playoffs, but was eliminated in the first round. Jackson might have been interested in Houston, but the Rockets have said coach Jeff Van Gundy will return.

If the Lakers don't bring Jackson back and give him control over personnel, he might sit out another year rather than join the Knicks. In that case, the Knicks would focus their attention on Spurs assistant P.J. Carlesimo, former Timberwolves coach Flip Saunders, former Blazers coach Maurice Cheeks and Williams.

JVG has some media support, and his supporters have crawled into the light, but he is hardly a "folk hero."
