I was balling last night, and fell down on the side of my ankle on top of somone elses shoes. It freakin hurt like a biatch for 15 minutes. but i figured it was gunna go away, its just a sprain. But i still cant rest any weight on it, or even stand up. The same thing happend to me almost exactly a year later, but i finished the game, then went home, and the doctor told me i had a fracture a few days later so like whats the signs of a fracture? anyone.
And while we wait a day or two for all the opinions to come in, call a doctor. I just re-read your post... you hurt your ankle last night and the same thing happened a year later? A time traveler among us!!!
Keep your foot elevated and take ibuprofen to keep the swelling down. You should have immediately put ice on it but maybe too late for that. After a certain time (maybe 24-48 hrs), you get off ice and go too heat. After you fully recover, you need to do ankle strengthening excersises. Once you've turned your ankle, you are more prone to doing it again...case in point. Academy sells a blue disk thing with a half ball on the bottom. You stand on it with one foot and move forward/back then side to side. Do this regularly and you'll be less likly to turn your ankle again. Oh, and did we say to call the Dr.
it happend a year ago, and it happened again yesterday. I tried to be a man last time and probably messed it up more. (played two more quarters) They put me on one of those air casts last time. Damn, shouldnt have thrown it away. thx for the info guys.
There are almost no "signs" of a fracture as compared to a bad sprain. The biggest difference of course would be the x-ray.
You might want to get one. I "sprained" my ankle playing ball in 1982. It was the worst sprain I had ever had. I couldn't play ball again for about 10 months but continued to play until about 1999. Then I took a few years off to raise children. I started back playing ball in 2003 but my ankle hurt like hell on occasion. I went and got an X-ray. Turns out I had fractured it in 1982 and had significant structural damage. I put a brace on it and dosed up with advil before playing. Two weeks later I tore the patella tendon off my knee and cracked my patella. No more ball for me. Now my ankle gives me as much problem as my knee. If you have any doubt, get it checked....
Hard to tell. X-ray only shows bone. Not soft tissue. And some fractures don't show up on x-ray for a while, if at all. If your symptoms don't go away, go to a foot and ankle specialist. Not just any doctor or the emergency room, as they can easily misdiagnose the injury. FYI, the Rockets use Dr. Kevin Varner at Methodist in the Medical Center. By the way, does anyone know who is doing Yao's ankle surgery in San Francisco? This was reported on the bbs a few days ago.
