If it had to be Metallica I would choose One or Sanitarium which IMO are the two best Metallica songs. I recommend everyone dowload a copy of both
Whiplash The Four Horsemen Seek and Destroy Damage, Inc. Are all better than Sanitarium and One. Don't get me wrong, I like those two songs, but Metallica has done much better. Sandman was just a little too cheesy for me.
Fade to Black by Metallica is also a great suicide anthem for pushing disgruntled teenagers over the brink. Into the Void by Black Sabbath gets my vote for best heavy metal song.
Inside Out, Fueled, & Only By Anthrax Victim of Changes By Judas Priest Fixation on the Darkness By Killswitch Engage Pick one, that's my fave.
I liked Metallica before that damn Black album. What the hell went wrong? They sold out to a new younger crowd and softies. Just about anything that AC/DC does gets me in the heavy metal mood.
Cowboys from Hell - Pantera Number of the Beast / 2 Minutes to Midnight - Iron Maiden N.I.B. - Black Sabbath Crazy Train - Ozzy Osbourne One - Metallica Holy Diver - Dio Just a few...
I also prefer the John Bush-era Anthrax. As far as Metallica goes, I'll take BATTERY and BLACKENED right now.
To say "best" means that the song has to excel on many levels. That said, "Back in Black" by AC/DC must be the winner. It's a great song whose appeal doesn't seem to diminish as the years go by. It succeeded against great odds, but the song was very important regarding the issue of the band's ability to deal with the loss of their lead vocal, and it determined the fate or future of the band.
Too right, Fueled is one of the best metal songs I've heard. Andymoon also said Number of the Beast - great metal song. Flotsam and Jetsam did a good cover of Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting, and let me throw Exodus's Cajun Hell out there too. Megadeth - how about Darkest Hour? However, best one I would probably have to go with Creeping Death.
