Can anyone explain the value of expiring contracts? I am not totally clueless on their value, but almost.

Didn't we a few years ago trade away some expiring contracts along with two number one draft choices to Utah so we could get under the cap? If I remember right, we traded a former all-star and two number ones to Utah for their worst player. We used the cap room to sign Jim Jackson.

Don't we have over 20 million in expiring contracts next year. How much trade value do we have there.

    Thanks

Trading away Rice was a special circumstance because, even though he'd expire in another year, the Rockets were afraid he'd cost them a whole lot of money in the meantime in luxury tax. That was a concern in the league for that year only because that's been the only year where it looked like the luxury tax would actually be triggered. It doesn't seem like anyone's worried about the luxury tax this year (pending, I suppose, the new CBA), so the value of the expiring contracts won't get submarined by a more immmediate need to shed payroll.

I think you are right about that the trading away of Rice was a special circumstance the last time.

Do you think our expiring contracts have any trade value? Should we let them expire so we can load up with free agents the following year or trade them to someone and take a long term commitment for a player(s).

    before NIKE gets you:

letting our expiring contracts, well...expire, will be a BAD move. even if we let them come off the cap, we will not be under the cap. on top of that all of this is moot right now because who knows what the new CBA will bring.

we should trade them to a team looking to dump a contract. (eg. mavs get KVH, GSW get davis...etc...)
