Dude, I agree iwth you on the two singles. Those aren't even close to my favorite tracks on the album. I love "Three Evils" and the title track. As for the lineup, you're right. I got them confused with another group that I read on allmusic.com at the same time. Give it a few more shots. It's actually growing on me.
I had the same thoughts. The problem with going 'back to their 90's sound' is that it sounded inspired then, but it doesn't really sound inspired now. It sounds like a caricature of their old 90's blue album stuff. Once again Cuomo plays the white nerd using some old hip-hop slang, only it just doesn't seem inspired. He's the out of place guy who doesn't fit in with the cool people. That was great on the original album, and seemed genuine. Now it sounds like he's playing himself in a made for TV movie. The guitar crunch also sounds like Weezer trying to show they can still be blue album weezer. I do admit the Frampton style solos on the song were a nice touch. The way I look at it is this. They were inspired about using Frampton style Solos, and forced the solo into this song, so that it doesn't really fit, or only helps highlight how uninspired the rest of the song is. That sounds a little harsh, because I don't hate the song. It is ok. In fact it is better than 80% of the stuff on the radio. It's just that coming from them it is a big let down.
While I do not yet own the new Weezer album, Beverly Hills and to a lesser extent 'Peace" and another song I can't remember the name of are getting HEAVY airplay out here in So Cal. As much as I hate to say it I really do not like what I've heard so far. Peace, Beverly Hills, etc seem so hackneyed and down right main stream that I can't believe this is supposed to be Weezer returning to their glorious Pinkerton, Blue album roots which contained so many unique song ideas and sugary hooks. Not to be harsh, but what I've heard so far is so bland, REO Speedwagon by comparrison would seem adventurous. I'll withhold final judgment till I have given the entire LP a few listens, but what I'm hearing on the radio so far is embarassingly bland. ~ Give me 'El Scorcho ~ anyday
ask and ye shall recieve..... ******* you half-Japanese girls do it to me every time oh, the redhead said you shred the cello And I'm jello, baby But you won't talk, won't look, won't think of me I'm the epitome of Public Enemy Why you wanna go and do me like that? Come down on the street and dance with me I'm a lot like you so please Hello, I'm here, I'm waiting I think I'd be good for you and you'd be good for me I asked you to go to the Green Day concert You said you never heard of them -How cool is that?- So I went to your room and read your diary: "watching Grunge leg-drop New-Jack through a press table..." and then my heart stopped: "listening to Cio-Cio San fall in love all over again." How stupid is it? I can't talk about it I gotta sing about it and make a record of my heart (How stupid is it? Won't you give me a minute Just come up to me and say hello to my heart) How stupid is it? For all I know you want me too and maybe you just don't know what to do or maybe you're scared to say: "I'm falling for you" I wish I could get my head out of the sand 'cuz I think we'd make a good team and you would keep my fingernails clean but that's just a stupid dream that I won't realize 'cuz I can't even look in your eyes without shakin', and I ain't fakin' I'll bring home the turkey if you bring home the bacon.
Thanks, dogg.... My copy of Pinkerton is in storage (along with 4/5ths of the rest of my cd's) in the dubious town of Bryan Tx.
You know what, Win? I wrote this in the other =w= thread, but I really think Matt Sharp leaving the band was the end of =w= as we know/knew them forever. I think he contributed to that characteristic Weezer sound that you speak of more than we originally thought. He co-wrote many of the songs on Blue and Pink. And of course, he did all the falsetto vocals, which used to be a Weezer staple and maybe the most unique (and greatest) thing about their music. I am muy disappointed with the new album too. I might not even buy it. And this is coming from a loyal 10+ year Weezer fan whose fanclub number is below 2000. We've gone from such classic lyrics as: Somebody’s heine is crowding my icebox. Somebody’s cold one is giving me chills. Guess I’ll just close my eyes to: Beverly Hills That's where I wanna be Beverly Hills
Well it's obvious they went way downhill after he left the band, but more than the backup vocals I miss Rivers' solos from that era. They used to be my favorite part of the band, and I HATE solos..sersiously, the only solos I like are by Rivers, Neil Young, Doug Martch, and J Mascis, nearly all of whom would make virtuso jackoffs like Steve Vai laugh. Seriously, they started sucking once River stopped playing cool solos and instead just copied the vocal pattern.
Friday Night- $30 on Mexican food and muchas margaritas para ima_drummer2k Saturday- $40 on ticket to Arturo Sandoval concert $25 on dinner for friends (I picked up the check) $20 on 3 pitchers of beer+tip for Rocket game Sunday- $60 on lunch for Mother and Sister (I picked up the check) = $175 So I guess a CD from a band you're supposedly a huge fan of just isn't in the budget?
I am telling you imma_drummer, listen to "Such A Pitty", it is Pink-Triangleesque, something very simalar to Pinkerton. That so far, is the best song on the album, kinda a throwback to 80's music!
I don't think it was a good idea to have Rick Rubin produce them. I mean, he's done some great stuff, I like what he did with Tom Petty for Wildflowers and of course his work with the Red Hot Chili Peppers. I think Weezer sounds better with Ric Ocasek producing or when they just produce themselves. Though it seems they, or Rivers alone, threw away tons of demos in the process of making this album, so they need an outside voice contributing an opinion. I haven't listened to those demos, but it seems fans all love them. Here are some quotes from the guys that comes on a video on the cd Patrick: It's easy to make restless music, but it's hard to make something that's genuinely uplifting and when I hear this record, I hear a lot of sunshine for lack of a better term. Brian: I'm definately no shredder or anything, but I feel like I'm more of a lyrical player. This record I feel is my best musicianship, for sure. Brian: We can't just keep cranking out the same record, and how we do that is by allowing new input, especially with the new member, Scott. Patrick: My favorite quote about the fans is that you can't be a true Weezer fan unless you're unhappy with what the band is doing. Patrick: When I hear that song (Beverly Hills), I think it's a really strange song, to be honest. Strange in a good Weezer characteristic way, like a guy talking about how is life is kind of crappy and he sounds like he's kind of down on himself and he's fairly pessimistic. Then to look at what you could characterize as gross people in Beverly Hills as an ideal is kind of twisted. I think that's what gives that song depth, it's not just the face value. There's a conscious effort from the band to change and that's evident. I think that's why this album is a let down as a Weezer album, but it's still really good album in it's own right. Here's the Rolling Stone review, 4 stars: http://www.rollingstone.com/reviews...eezer?pageid=rs.Artistcage&pageregion=triple1
I'm disappointed with this album. There's nothing unique about it. It's your run-of-the-mill pop rock.
I was overall disappointed with the album as well. I went to see them in San Francisco and I was very dissapointed in the show.
Album is VERY disappointing IMO. "Hold Me" is probably the worst song Rivers has ever written. Just wow.
That's wierd. I just bought it and listened to it a couple times and i thought it was awesome. Very Weezer, which is a good thing.
I just read the lyrics at a stoplight on the way home. My five year-old niece could write deeper lyrics than that. Seriously bad.
Almost everyone gave this album great reviews. I don't know what I'm missing. I mean, I wasn't expecting the Blue Album. I was hoping for another "Pinkerton" though. I'll keep listening to it though hoping it grows on me. BTW, is it just me or does it sound like this band hates each other according to interviews?
