I've been thinking for a while about taking a LONG driving trip for a vacation. I was considering flying to Boston where my step brother lives, renting a car and just making my way back going through NYC, Philly, Baltimore, DC, Virginia, NC, Atlanta, through Tennessee, Arkansas and then back to Houston. And, I'm thinking if I do it, I should meet some fellow BBSers along the way even if it is just to stop for dinner or lunch or something. I haven't planned out when or where yet. I'm just thinking about it now - probably sometime in July or early August. If anyone has suggestions for an itenerary, I'm all ears.
If you swing through Houston make sure you find me! oh wait...it's that Jeff. You have already met me. sorry.
Jeff, Holler at me if you do decide to come through Tennessee - I'll see if I can take off from work that day if it is during the week.
Absolutely. In fact, I'd still plan on getting some work in while I was gone with my laptop. And, my camera would be my best friend. thegary: I'd probably take 2 weeks to make the whole drive, maybe slightly longer. Manny: You know you are on my list, bud.
jeff, two weeks seems like a sufficient amount of time. i did it in a week and didn't really get to see all that i wanted to. i would structure/divide the drive based upon 4 or 5 must-sees and be spontaneous with the time in between.
That's EXACTLY what I'm doing. I want to go to a Red Sox game in Boston, see ground zero and hit a few clubs in NYC. I want to see at least some of the Smithsonian and go back to the Lincoln Memorial. I'd like to see Nashville and spend one night on Beale Street in Memphis. Those are the biggies, but I'm up for suggestions otherwise.
I owe you breakfast; let me know if you can make it this far southeast (Greensboro/Winston-Salem).... If you can, be here for lunch on a Thursday: Thai food with a traveling assemblage of friends including one who was an early member of the Austin music scene-- back in the mid-to-late 70s when there were just a couple of clubs. We don't have a "spare" bedroom but you are still young enough to "crash" right?
I'm over in St. Louis for the next couple of months if you want to drop by. I have an extra bedroom and in a pretty cool part of town. I know its a little out of the way but you have free room and board if you come this way.
Great idea! I got shunned in Chicago this past Xmas, but I've met a couple of great guys in the Bay Area.
I definitely want to get that direction. And, yes, I am most certainly young enough to crash. Anything to save me money!
Wow, I just mapblasted a drive from houston to philadelphia this afternoon which would take me to most of the places on your itinerary. I'm moving up to philly in june, and I decided I'd just drive my car up and see some of the sites. Looks like you'll be doing my drive in reverse. Enjoy it.
Just thinking about it, something like this would make sense... Wednesday-Friday - Boston Friday-Sunday - NYC Sunday-Monday - Philly Monday-Wednesday - DC Wednesday-Thursday - VA/NC Thursday-Sunday - TN/AK Sunday-Monday - Dallas (I have a friend there) Monday - head back to Houston Something along those lines with maybe an extra day to spare in there somewhere.
