I know I'm not actually answering your question, but I've loved my Rio Carbon to death since I got it.

wow, i just watched and read the review for the rio on cnet... it looks great.. and its $149 or so...

the only draw back i see is the lack of a wheel to skim through your playlist...:(

I still prefer it over an ipod mini... it has superior battery life, it charges quicker, and you don't have to use a particular program like itunes to load music.

    question on that

do you have to have "itunes" like tunes from apple (not the program) that you have to pay for, to use on the ipod?

You just need the free program, that's it. Nothing you have to pay for.

I just have a mild distaste for itunes as music playing software (because it's unnecessarily large), and I very much dislike a portable music player that forces me to use a particular program to be able to load music. With my Rio I can just plug it into anybody's computer, drag any music file into my Rio's music directory, and I'm done. No software required whatsoever.

EDIT: Wait... re-reading your question, are you asking about the file format? You buy music from the itunes store in AAC format, but your ipod will also play MP3s.

they have some refurbished ipod minis on the apple site for $169, if you really want a mini and want to save some money too. i think they come with a 1 year warranty.

I have a 20 gig IPOD and have seen the MINI Dells and that's what I would go with if I were gonna have to pay for one.. I HATE Itunes and the other program I use cost me another 30 dollars to make it a true MP3 player.. ITUNES SUCKS!!! style and batt life are better with the Apple, but the guts of the thing dont really work well for me..

I have the 30gb ipod. Never had a problem and Love it. But that said, I use Rio for sports as it seems to take a lot of punishment when playing sports and jogging.

I will second this. I love my Dell DJ30 and got it on sale for $250.00 (plus free shipping). I'm encoding at around 256k (mix of variable and constant bit rate MP3s) and still have about 6 gigs left over after putting more than 2000 songs on my player.

Yeah, I was asking about if you can ONLY put music that you buy in a certain format from a certain store (itunes) onto your ipod.

But it can play like regular mp3's off your system too ?

A dell dj might save you a little money per GB, but it'll never get you laid. iPods are just cooler and more fun to use. Much more of a conversation piece, and a much better resale value.

have you looked into the rio carbon..

    its a wonderful mp3 player

smaller than the ipod and dell dj, longer battery life, similar storage capacity, and cheaper

"cooler" "more fun to use" "conversation piece" = marketing slave

Think for yourself! Be independant! Don't be a slave to fashion! ;)

Besides, I bet no one EVER got laid because they had an iPod (especially in a situation where they wouldn't have gotten laid in the first place) unless they offerd the iPod in exchange for sex. And, if that's the case how desperate does that make you. How desperate does that make your partner?

I got a 20 GB IPod last June for my birthday, and I love it. I also like ITunes because you can get a full CD that you like cheaper than you could at say Best Buy(most are 9.99) and you don't have to go through the hassle of putting the CD into your ipod music files as it uploads direct to your IPod. To illustrate how many songs a 20 GB Ipod will hold, I have like 500 on mine and it only takes up about 1/10(5,000 songs) of the space I can use.
