Normally when the Rockets are eliminated from playoff contention I can find solice in the Astros because they are usually in the hunt. Saturday night- 116-76 Sunday afternoon- 16-0 (last place) Has it ever been any worse?
four words: Houston Oilers Buffalo Bills The Rockets, Astros, and Texans could go a combined 0-260 and it wouldn't come close to the pain of that one game...
Far from the worse. Even the Rockets have lost much more painful games that on their own make it worse. 2 that immediately come to mind, obviously is Seattle Game 7 in 92 and Utah Game 6 in 97 (??). I have no idea how the Stros were doing on those days, but I can certainly guess they sucked back in 92.
With UH vs. NC state a close 2nd Astros - Phillies 3rd Astros - Mets 4th Astros - Cards 5th Oilers - Chiefs 6th Oilers - Dallas Texans (1962) 7th Rockets - Jazz 8th Whether or not any of these fell on a weekend is inconsequential, they all made the following weekend painful.
Nice list. The only one I would add to it would be the Oilers - Broncos. (Another Elway last second drive to win the game).
The UH (Phi Slamma Jamma) and NC State final bothered me more than that. I couldn't watch college basketball for 10 years.
For me personally, the loss was too laughable and lopsided to hurt. Now 41-38... that was sheer gutwrenching, tear jerking, slow-motion torture.
yeah, nothing beats that. keeping with the theme of last week, didnt we get screwed by some missed calls in that game too? like don beebe running out of bounds and then coming back in to catch a pass and score a touchdown
Because no one mentioned it (or caught it) during the game itself. But it's in the SI article recapping the game the following week... That game is what ultimately ended my life as a football fanatic.
I'm amazed at my personal evolution as a sports fan. In the very recent past, a loss like Saturday's would have me in a funk for at least a week. However, I'm in a perfectly happy mood today. Maybe it's because I'm a new uncle again and I'm about to meet my nephew for the first time. Maybe it's because I'm about to marry the most wonderful woman in the world. Maybe it's because one of my best friends and I screamed at each other halfway through the third quarter causing me to go home early and that just got all the anger out of me. I honestly don't know. But I do know that I like it. It's just wonderful to come to the realization that while sports will always be my top love outside of family and friends (sorry Dave...both Matthews and Robicheax), they're really not worth getting too upset over.
That wouldn't be the game with the now infamous botched "stagger lee" play? Maybe I am confusing bad memories of the Oilers in Mile High Stadium.
I think watching the Oilers blow it in the playoffs so many years, especially with that debacle in Buffalo, taught me not to take sports entirely seriously.
