I was looking forward to it but guess I'll wait until it comes out on DVD, especially to get the deleted Eva Green scenes. I also was really dissapointed with Troy. The sensitive Achilles just didn't do it for me along with inventing a character to be his conscience. The idea of making Agamemnon a thuggish leader bent on conquest seemed a overblown when a lot of the material about him before portrayed him as being a reluctant leader. Troy to me just seemed so desperate to make Achilles a hero in both a modern and classical sense that they had to go and make Agamemnon a card board cutout of a political villian who shamelessly manipulates things to get power. IMO a better direction would've had Achilles as the warrior so eager to get glory that he siezes upon Menalaus's plight to press a reluctant Agamemnon to commit the Greeks to a devestating war.
Having just looked up some pics of Eva Green on IMDb.com, I'm wondering if the director cut out the sex scene stuff because Eva isn't all that much to look at. She's not ugly, but going by typical Hollywood standards, she is far from a knockout... maybe they just don't have any good pics of her.
They actually didn't make Muslims look like evil characters in this movie, which was my initial fear.
Come on, don't you remember movies like True Lies, The Siege, Back to the Future, Hidalgo, etc. That's just off the top of my head.
OK, I stand corrected. There are certain legions in Hollywood that work under the influence of the neocons. However, I think that it's obvious that most Hollywood writers and directors have a more liberal stance on issues regarding religion. Historically Saladin has always been portrayed as a somewhat positive character in Western literatures. It's difficult to change that perspective in this one movie. I'll stop right here. Otherwise this thread will have to be moved to D&D.
There's an interesting book you should check if you ever have a chance. It's called Reel Bad Arabs and it chronicles how Arabs have been portrayed in Hollywood. Regardless of Hollywood's political leanings, Arabs have historically been used mainly as bad guys.
All natural too. I've seen pics, but not the movie because the plot really weirds me out. I've tried to rent it, but the only time I go the Blockbuster is when I'm home from school and my sisters are usually in tow and want to watch whatever I rent.
Gladiator is visibly stunning I like the story because I love revenge inspired movies I dunno about best picture but it was d*mn good to watch Troy was fine visually but the story was not as great Eric Bana was incredible and carried the movie Rocket River
I thought Gladiator was good, but definitely not Best picture. If you really think about it, it had no real depth.
I liked Gladiator. I had one major problem with it, and that was the overly stylized flashback sequences that looked like an attempt by Ridley Scott to show that he could be as edgey as someone in the current MTV generation. The style of the flashbacks didn't fit with the movie. Kingdom of Heaven only had one strange, extremely short scene like that. I will be one of the minority here, but I liked it better than I liked Gladiator. There was a slow part right in the middle, and the movie ended up being 8 minutes too long. It didn't have a breakout performance like Joaquin Phoenix put in for Gladiator, but the movie over all was more enjoyable. I think I liked the subject matter more, so that may be a part of it.
