NEW YORK (AP) -- Chicago guard Ben Gordon won the NBA's Sixth Man of the Year award on Tuesday, the first rookie to win the award.

Gordon, the third overall pick in the draft out of Connecticut, averaged 15.1 points, 2.6 rebounds and 2.0 assists in just over 24 minutes this season. He came off the bench in 79 of 82 games this season and helped the Bulls make their first playoff appearance since 1998, when Michael Jordan led them to their sixth title.

Their first-round series with the Washington Wizards is tied 2-2. Game 5 is Wednesday night in Chicago.

He received 88 of 125 first-place votes and 513 points from a panel of media members. Boston guard Ricky Davis was second with 257 points, and Denver guard Earl Boykins was third with 155.

Davis also started 15-16 games this year, and played ten minutes more a game than Gordon did. The Bulls also had a better record than the C's.

Ben Gordon deserves this award. What he's done this year has been remarkable. I just hope that he doesn't get overrated by the media now. He is, after all, a bench player.

Davis is better than Gordon: MUCH better defense, better shooting (almost 5% better from the field) and better overall scoring (more points on less attempts.) The only rational argument against him winning the sixth-man award is that he played more minutes. What do you have against this guy? Have you met him personally?

What pisses me off is that people in the Boston sports media still bash him non-stop. Meanwhile, up in Chicago they call a combo-guard who's a defensive turnstile and shoots at a 42% clip "Ben Jordan." Sheesh.

No, I'm not bitter or anything ;) I just think that Gordon is really, really overhyped, and that Ricky Davis doesn't deserve most of the hatred fans give him.

I've still never gotten over him purposefully missing a shot on his own basket to try and get a triple double. That's about as selfish and bush league as it gets right there...

Oh, stop it. I'm sure you were right in line with everyone else on earth until the day he put on green.

Put it this way: The Bulls and Celtics both won the first game of their playoff series. Between the Sixth Man of the Year and the runner-up, only one of them was seen in front of his own bench yelling "get out the brooms!" for everyone to hear.

KellyDwyer, I didn't direct that towards you, but that other guy (he doesn't suck balls! I swear, I've seen him play! ;) ) But I do remember watching him on that awful Cavs squad the year he averaged 20 ppg, and felt bad for him when the fans turned against him after he tried to inflate his stats. When he got traded, I was scratching my head as to why everyone thought it was a bad trade for the C's, when nobody thought that they could get the same production out of Eric Williams then they could out of Davis. Yeah, nobody in Cleveland wants him back, but the Cavs would have been better off making peace with him along with Darius Miles, and getting those two to compliment Lebron.

I couldn't stand Gary Payton, though.

Anyway, yeah, Ricky's a piece of work - he talks trash and poses after dunks. But lots of guys do that. He has no off-court baggage. And I think he's the best non-starter in the NBA.

And I also think Gordon is overhyped. He's an excellent combo guard who reminds me of a younger David Wesley... but I don't think he's destined to superstardom. Out of last year's draft, I think Telfair and Livingston will have a greater chance at being special than Gordon (or Devin Harris.)
