Considering games like Katamari Damacy and Wario Ware, I think the Japanese game developers have to be on something when they are going through development, so maybe this isn't a bad thing. He may have some crazy ideas for a game that will be a hit...somewhere...maybe in Japan or something.

Of course, he was playing an Xbox, so maybe he was dangerously high. *jab* *jab* ;)

Seriously, I would think of this as a difficult situation. I have no experience on situations like this, and I am more anti-drugs than most, but I'd probably do what most of the posters here said. Just let him know that if he does it again, he can start looking for a new job. Of course, I'm assuming that the smell was the only indication that he was high. Other things may change my actions.

    Yep,

I did not "Catch" him in the act, only smelled him in the act.

    :)

He has been dealt with, and warned that his job is in jeapordy by doing something like that or by hanging around with people like that which can cause him to smell like he is doing it.

I really don't care what people do on their own time and at their own premises, but at work and on my dime, be sober and be professional.

If he was a Mavs or Spurs fan he would be gone, but he is a Rocket fan, so that counted for a few points.

If you have a company policy you need to follow it. If you don't have a written company policy you need one. If you're not following your own company policy, you need to change it.

What you do this time can affect your choices next time you face the situation, although the fact that he is an independent contractor and not an employee is significant.

Consider giving your lawyer a call.

None of the foregoing is legal advice. YMMV.

I'm not sure we should trust anyone with the nickname "Pipe". ;)

There's a new cologne going around called "sensi". Maybe that is what you smelled? :D

    Hmm...

How awkwardly funny would it be if he posted here...

"My Boss Caugh Me High Today...Should I Start Searching for a New Job?"

there's a few lessons the be learned from this incident:

    1) Be the boss.

    2) If you're gonna get buzzed....vodka's your friend.

    3) Always let you boss think you're fanatical about his favorite sports team.

Being high on weed, coke, pills, booze or whatever has always been grounds for immediate termination anyplace I've worked.

I guess you could give him a warning if he wasnt causing any trouble.

You should definately have a private talk with the guy.

Remember, you set the standard bossman!:)

I cant believe most are voting (and justifying) for him to stay employed. By him showing up reeking of weed, this guy has shown that he has no respect for you or your company. Do you really thing you are the only one in your company that realized this guy was high? What were the other employee's thinking? "Man I hope the boss doesnt smell this guy today, oh wait, he did? I guess that he doesnt care. Thats good to know."

Fire the loser and hire someone who respects you and your company. There are plenty of people willing to play video games for a living that will set an example for others.

Giving a stern warning isn't letting the guy loose. Finding and training another person after firing a dude that smells of weed might be more trouble than its worth.

in the mid-90's i lived next to an APD officer who i may or may not have indulged with a few times. he was also part of what apparently is, a big time bath-house style gay fraternity w/ in APD. he would host all kinds of crazy parties w/ fellow officers. he was not non-chalant about his sexual orientation either.

    nice guy though.

Well, he could potentially creat some awesomely trippy video game for hippies...

If not, I'd just give him a warning, and say that next time, he'll get fired.
