Got a job there that I badly wanted and now I'm moving. Anybody out there spent any time in Providence? And, if so, any tips?
Ah yes Providence home of the.... I mean famous for....I got it known as.... Oh my bad I got confused with another exciting city, Bizmark.
A few years ago there was a pretty, single doctor-lady who was always looking for a man, but I think she's moved on.
Excellent news batman! I'm sure you're very excited! And you'll be just a hop, skip and a jump to Martha's Vineyard! Playground to the stars! Just tell me where to send my resume'!
I had a friend who went to RISD. I visited him a few times. I liked the town. There are two really decent record stores in town, and I like college towns a lot anyway. It also has some nice New England architecture. It's kind of hilly, but overall a nice town. That was the impression I got the little time I spent there, and from talking about it with my friends who went to college there. The part of Providence that isn't Brown or RISD is fairly industrial I think, and I didn't really experience it much. There used to be one place in providence that carried Shiner Bock. Living in NY it was impossible to get Shiner there, so that was also a treat. I have no idea if they still carry it, or if more places carry it. It has been about 4 years since I have been there though.
I don't know, but that would seem kind of weird to live in a state that's smaller than Harris County... "Hey honey, I'm going to Massachusetts. I'll be back by dinner"
It happens in a lot of places too, like some of the southern states that have more borders. I used to live in one state and work in another; I'd be over the line in 15 minutes. My mother keeps a boat in Mississippi, but you can see Tennessee from there. When she's out in the river, there's a point where she could be in any one of three states. Batman... wow, how many places have you lived the last few years? It's hard to keep up.
congrats dude, it soundedlike an amazing opportunity, and it's pretty impressive that you won out over 200 other candidates!
I was in a 20 mile road race that started in Maine, went through New Hampshire and ended in Massachusetts. Congratulations Batman. Providence is a nice place.
Isabel: In the last two years I have lived in Houston, Atlanta, Albuquerque and Pittsburgh (and boy are my arms tired). Also two months in NYC and a lot of driving around the country. I'll be in Providence for two years at the very least. I'm hopeful it'll be a lot longer than that. Can't talk specifically about the job before my new employers have had a chance to announce it to the press, but thanks to everyone for the kind words. I'm stoked. The job and the Dylan/Merle Haggard show I saw tonight (I'm in New York now) made the loss to the Mavs go down a little easier. khan: Philly's not on the route unfortunately. Come visit. mc mark: Details soon. basso: It was only 63 actually. Not more than 200. The rest of you: Thanks for the kind words. And it's hilarious that some of you call Providence small, being from Houston. Providence is small, but when I lived in Houston (which I did for over 30 years), I never left the loop. Inside the loop's Houston to me. The rest is suburbs. The difference in Providence is that Boston will be my Spring and New York will be my Austin. I'm not too worried.
Providence is pretty interesting. It's really blue collar but the Brown/RISD area is one of the more progressive areas of the entire country. Back in the early 90's, Providence went through a large restoration program of the downtown area. I haven't been there for close to 10 years but I imagine it's still really nice around there. I've always like Providence and with the train system it's really easy to get to Boston or NY. Plus there's plenty of beach nearby for the 2 months of summer.
