Earlier tonight I was reading about a Tourney of Traditions that espn.com ran a while back that pitted the top 40 college football traditions against each other. I wasn't able to find a list of what all 40 of the teams/traditions were though. Anyone know if there are any websites out there that have the top college football traditions? I'm interested in taking a peek at what traditions some other school have.
I kind of like Aggie fans kissing after touchdowns. They definitely need to take that one step further have have guys start sucking on chicks' nipples...
some of my friends that go/went to ole miss say "tailgating" at the grove is the most kick-ass tradition around. i've seen pics, and it definitely looks sweet. my buddy (fraternity guy) says game days were a huge ordeal.... every guy asked a girl to be his date and everyone got dressed up for the game (guys usually wear red slacks with white button up and school tie) and pre/post game activities. i would love to check that out first hand.
actually dressing up really nice for games.. expensive dresses, ties, sports coats etc is a vandy tradition too.. we're not into any of those traditions that involve winning games.... I want to make a road trip for an SEC game next year, so I'll be curious as to which SEC teams are named.. might want to check one out. .. ole miss sounds like a fun one
When I was in college, our tradition was to get hammered before our games.....and then march at halftime.
Definitely, AGGIE traditions are the best. The 12th man is the crowd, and ONE DUDE on the team gets to wear 12 on the jersey. AWESOME. I am SO GLAD you added "chicks'" on there. Since you said FOOTBALL, I don't think the one where the FREE THROW SHOOTER does some kind of ritual going behind his back and dribble between his legs before a shot. What college does that?
I thought it would have been "sheep". I never understood why people dressed up for ball games. You're sitting out in the sun for hours and getting up and cheering and having a good time. Shouldn't you be comfortable? It seems more sensible to wear team T-shirts, (or at least colors), hats, etc. The first time I ever saw people dressed up for a game was Ole Miss fans, and I thought it was weird. (Mississippi State fans would rather be comfortable.) As for the best college football traditions... The Rice University Marching Owl Band The "spirit lines" where all the fans go out on the field to greet the team and release balloons at the beginning of RICE games I could go on...
I'm with Isabel - I have never understood that either. Why would you want to wear practically a suit and your date is wearing some prom dress when you are going to a damn football game? Don't you want to be comfortable? But Rocket Fan, you need to check out the Iroquois Steeplechase. I believe that the place that holds it is off Old Hickory Boulevard (it is not too far from Vanderbilt, IIRC). They hold it every year in May and there are people who go all out with the fancy dress and stuff for this event. You probably have heard of it, maybe even went last year, but it is a definite Nashville tradition. But once again, just like with the college football games, I don't understand why the need to get all dressed up. At least for this thing, there are breaks in the action and you can walk around (although most who really dress up stay down in the infield of the track and not up on the hill where the peons sit).
manny.. Thanks for the tip. I've actually never been to it. We end in early May so I've probably just not been here when it happens. For instance, I'm done with academics next Wednesday and will be out of here next saturday most likely.. meaning I won't be here. After looking at their site.. it is on May 14th, meaning I'll miss it this year again. Next year I'll be here later, but if it falls the same weekend again it will be graduation weekend so might be busy Thanks for the info though, I'd like to check it out. Especially since I see it benefits Vanderbilt Childrens Hospital so it is for a good cause.
Isabel is so fing funny...too bad I'm not laughing. Says that Isabel is from the hill country, so she's either a sip or a wannabe sip from San Marcos...typical.
isabel. one more year left... then back to the great state of Texas for good..taco c mmmmmm.. Rick Perry's son is a junior here too, so maybe at graduation I can talk to him about having Texas annex this campus. texas texas texas texas texas texas .. must get back to texas
Definitely something to check out if you have the opportunity. However, if you aren't an Ole Miss fan, you better bring some ear plugs because the Hotty Toddy chant will get old after a while. Also, I hope you like "Dixie" because they play it at least one time every five minutes.
OK, OK. 1) I'm not a current college student. 2) I suppose I can plead guilty to being a "sip", since I do have a degree from UT. 3) I also have a degree from Rice, and consider myself a lot bigger fan of that football team than UT's. The UT experience did inspire my appreciation of a few traditions, mainly: 1) sheep jokes and 2) the Hex Rally where they put the hex on A&M.
