With the salary cap as it is, older vets with big salaries never get traded, just released. The rare exception is for a "glamour" position guy, like Drew Bledsoe.
I wouldnt say its a lateral move. Maybe for the time being its a lateral move, but 1 year from now, it will be a big step in the right direction. Couple things that make it good: 1) Glenn's age vs. Buchanon's age Basically, we gain about 8 years. Therefore, its an obvious move to establish youth. 2) Glenn's talent vs. Buchanon's talent As of now, I would say that maybe they are equal. However, Buchanon can get better while Glenn is on the decline. 3) Glenn's contract vs. Buchanon's contract Bottomline, Glenn makes too much money for what he brings to the table. PB will me making a whopping 700K. We save a crapload of money over the next 3 years by cutting Glenn. Its a business move that doesnt hinder the skill level of our defense. In a hard cap world, its a no brainer. Next up: Gary Walker
Aaron Glenn deserves to be ripped for the way he handled this situation. I get the feeling the Texans had no desire to cut him or trade him, but Glenn forced their hand. The reason why I think this is because I heard his interview on 610 this afternoon. Glenn basically admitted he didn't want to sit on the bench, but then when talking about going to Dallas he said whether it's as a starter or a nickel back he is excited about doing whatever they ask of him. I'm embarrassed at the Houston media not questioning him after he said that. I understand he is just trying to "say the right things" but still you have to come back with a counter question. The bottom line is I think Glenn got his feelings hurt that the Texans brought in a young talented corner in Buchanon and he is the one who asked for the trade/release not the team.
I heard that same thing on 610. The only thing dumbass Lord inferred from those remarks was that the Texans told Glenn he would be behind Petey ****ing Faggins in the nickel package. "The Voice" always ready to overhype Petey went right along with it. Just about the most absurd **** I've heard. Lord later couldn't recall who our free safety was... The guy just sucks sometimes.
yeah..that's what i totally didn't understand. Glenn was saying he didn't want to be a distraction in competing for a job among two good younger players....but then went to the Cowboys to do that very thing???? where am i??
Sharper and Glenn gone for laterals or slight upgrades, PLUS cap room. Will it be spent, spent well, or ? ? ?
That headline would be accurate...if this was written a year ago. Brown lost his job to Earl halfway through the season and Foreman was replaced by DaShon Polk after he went on IR in week 13. You remember . That was right about the time the Texans "D" began it's streak of 12 quarters without giving up a TD. A little hyperbole by ESPN there.
I've been a fan of Glenn since his aggie days but he did seem to be giving up big catches last year...hope the extra money will be spent wisely.
Most of the cap room benefit doesn't occur until after this year, just to be clear. According to Houstonprofootball, the pro-rated signing bonus hit is $3.5 mil vs. $4 mil if he had stayed. You gain $500,000 but also free up a roster spot which has to be filled.
Exactly. We dont take on their contracts for future years, instead, we can use that money elsewhere. I really would love to get rid of Walker's contract by next year. That's the worst contract in Texan history. Well, maybe 2nd worst, after handing out a contract of any value to Matt Stevens.
Sorry about the long wait. For some strange reason, I never thought about checking out this forum for a thread about a former Texans CB. Of course, I like the deal. I've been trying to keep away from most Cowboys news in an attempt to not get over-hyped, so this came as a complete surprise to me ( and a pleasant one at that). I was a little worried about the secondary after reviewing the Cowboys moves after the draft, especially at the corner position, but this really improves that spot. Parcells is making sure that the defensive woes we had last year won't emerge again next year. Hopefully, those rookies and new defensive schemes will work so that we won't have to count on Glenn (or other DB's) covering his man for 4+ seconds. I'm pretty glad to hear all the positive comments about Glenn. I always thought pretty highly of him, but hadn't kept up with him as closely as I could have. It sucks to lose him like this and have him sign with the Cowboys, but at least you still got two great young corners starting for your defense. And now for the correlation: Glenn will debut in the fall of '05, just like the Cowboys. Chances are that many Cowboys fans will absolutely love him the first year since he may bring something we haven't seen much of. He'll probably be solid again in the second year, although there may be news of a newer, better corner from the draft/free agency that could take his place. After 2 years, there may be no future for Glenn unless he pulls off something incredible. Also, while I'm sure Glenn is a likable guy, he won't improve the Cowboys relations with Japan. Chances are that no one will even know he exists. It's amazing how similar the Xbox 360 and Aaron Glenn really are.
