I'm here to introduce the conservatives that are about to say 'who cares what the rest of the world thinks'. These of course are the same people that insisted Clinton embarrassed the US. Here's....
I'll gladly be the first to openly state that I'm conservative. I personally think it's kind of silly that everyone seems to try to hard to argue and bicker in this forum... I usually steer clear. The fact is that we can't even agree on the Rockets most of the time, so of course we're all going to disagree on moral issues and political issues. I'm going to avoid any debate here, and just say this. I have a feeling that one day we'll all be thankful for any military protection we can get. This peaceful utopia we live in isn't going to last forever. ------------------ "There are three kinds of lies: Lies, Damned Lies, and STATISTICS..." - Mark Twain -
DarkHorse, I wasn't looking for an argument. It was just an observation and a question after reading the news. ------------------ 'Deeds, not words, shall speak me.'
Anyone else see West Wing last week? They did a pretty good job attacking the idea of a Star Wars II (Empire Strikes Back?) missle defense system. ------------------ I am Jack's utter lack of surprise. www.clutchtown.com
That's because the West Wing is a liberal show. I'm sure they didn't bother to present an equally strong argument for it. I must've missed that episode. Were the Rockets on at the same time? Maybe I was working.
Achebe, Are you ready to stir up some people? Are you having a bad day? This is the second, um, pointed post you've made within an hour. I like a good debate as much as anyone, but there's no reason to stereotype or insult people. There is a huge variety of viewpoints and opinions on this board -- and that's part of what makes it so great. ------------------- I think if Germany, or France, or Italy, were really concerned, they would tell the US through more formal channels. The problem with international politics is that people don't always express themselves directly. There is a good chance that these countries are concerned about their citizens demanding the same protection, forcing them to build one too, and they don't have the resources to invest in development. My guess is that once it is developed and proven, these countries will get it as well, just as our NATO allies now have the Patriot and Standard missiles. No, I can't read their minds, but if they were really upset, they would let us (Bush) know in stronger terms. Calling it "Son of Star Wars" is really streching it. If you'll notice, it is only talking about using the sattelite for communication. "Star Wars" was a completely different project. ------------------ Stay Cool...
Since when has anyone ever liked Americans? You act like this is a new phenomenon. ------------------ [This message has been edited by Summer Song Giver (edited January 30, 2001).]
No way. The West Wing is ... liberal??? I can't believe it. And no, they presented a pretty half-assed argument for the system. Which is fine - at least the show presents its agenda without trying to hide the fact that it is biased. ------------------ I am Jack's utter lack of surprise. www.clutchtown.com
He's going to blow us all up. Gorbachev can't save our asses this time. But that's what I get: I traded a Bush vote for an arena vote and now it's time to pay the piper! ------------------ RealGM Rockets Draft Obligations Summary Gafford Art Artisan

Sorry, I'm just getting email harrassment from someone on this board. ------------------ I keep plugging away, but I just can't get a 3 way to work on realwife.com
Did the BBC complain when Clinton financed the NMD? The NMD was going on long before Bush became president, Bush is simply carrying on the legacy of past administrations. ------------------
I'm sorry to hear that. I thought you weren't being your usual self. I know how you feel. Good luck. ------------------ Stay Cool...
Bill Clinton’s first (1993) budget shifted funds from national to theater missile defences. In 1996, a Republican effort to raise missile defence as a campaign issue failed with the voters but scared the White House enough to shift funds back to a national defence system. The Republican-controlled Congress added more money each year. By 2000, the President’s budget proposal had come full circle, with more funds devoted to national missile defence than to theater programmes. Conservatives disparaged the President’s commitment to missile defence, suspecting an elaborate conspiracy to deny them the prize they seek. But this was a genuine effort. The President’s plan was clear: develop a workable land-based system that could provide some protection against small attacks, line-up the allies in support, win Russian agreement to modify the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty, and begin construction this year. Clinton would take the issue away from the Republicans, preserve the ABM treaty, and prove that Democrats do defence better. But he couldn’t square this particular circle. On September 1, he announced he could not authorize deployment and was deferring the decision to his successor. http://www.acronym.org.uk/50nmd.htm ------------------ 'Deeds, not words, shall speak me.'
It is true that the whole world is against us but you shouldn't speak of it on this board, thats just what they want you to do. ------------------ Ceo of the Walt Williams fan club. Web site coming soon atheistalliance.org
I don't see a problem with missile defense if it works and is not some joke excuse to spend billions of dollars on nothing. Anyways, when some terrorist eventually has nuclear missile capabilities (and they will), it won't be France, Germany, or Italy that is targeted. It's going to be the good ole USA takin a nuke up the you know what because our allies just don't think missile defense is a good idea. I'd rather be safe than sorry. ------------------ "Somebody DO something out there." -Bill Walton
From BBC... Seems the whole world has major concerns about the United States' (in particular, GWB's) policy plans of renewing and financing star wars. Or in GWBs case "son of Star Wars". Are we going to piss off all our allies? http://news.bbc.co.uk/hi/english/world/americas/newsid_1144000/1144633.stm ------------------ 'Deeds, not words, shall speak me.'
Man oh Man. I have something to say about this. maybe its stupid, may its wrong, but im gonna say it anyway. There is a debate about whether or not the USA should develop and implement some sort of nuclear defense system. Our allies and most other nations are opposed to our system. This is because we would have an advantage in missile defense. I want my country to have a missle defense system. Its important enough to piss off other countries for. Simple as that. ------------------ The next time I have meat and mashed potatoes, I think I'll put a very large blob of potatoes on my plate with just a little piece of meat. And if someone asks me why i didn't get more meat, ill just say, "Oh, you mean this?" and pull out a big piece of meat from inside the blob of potatoes, where ive hidden it. Good magic trick, huh?
with this issue, nothing is simple. it's important not to piss off our allies. go rent the movie "Deterrence" from 1999 and you might change your mind. ------------------
