Elvis and Bob... Funny how these things pan out. Elvis hasn't made too many appearances in the whats-in-your-cd-player threads, yet he's a good shot at making the finals....And the beatles won the best band, yet rarely grace our music threads...
Through SamCassell's picks: Elvis Presley 11, Jimi Hendrix 11 Bob Dylan 13, Neil Young 8 Freak - I am shocked that you are not voting for Hendrix - what gives, dude?
JOHN LENNON!!! If I have to vote for these yawners, I'd go: -Jimi Hendrix -Bob Dylan Neil friggin' Young? Are you kidding me?? [/Puke]
That sounds good to me. I predict the Beatles in a walk (especially if it's Dylan -- I suspect half his opponents have benefited by people voting against him rather than for him), but it'd still be fun.
1) Elvis Presley (Bracket A Winner) Vs. 1) Jimi Hendrix (Bracket C Winner) Just got through listening to Electric Ladyland again. Brilliant. Just brilliant. I've read some comments about Jimi have a "truncated career," but what would you call Elvis's? In his early years, the man was awesome, but after he started making his long, loooonnng string of movies, he slowly turned into the Elvis of Las Vegas, except he hadn't gotten there yet. People tend to forget how quickly we lost the force of nature that was Elvis in the '50's, who blew away America on the Ed Sullivan Show, and on the radio. With some exceptions, I don't think he had that long of a career, creatively, at all. He was managed almost into a eunuch of his former self, which is tragic. At least Jimi, as much of a genius as he was, clearly was getting even better, and was moving into the blues/jazz realm deeper and deeper. He was an incredible blues guitarist and songwriter. He backed up Little Richard, Wilson Pickett, the Isley Brothers, Sam Cooke and B.B. King before being discovered in New York by Chas Chandler. The guy had roots, understood the blues, and none could handle a guitar like him, before or since. I know that's stating the obvious, but I don't think many realize just how far he took himself in directions we're still trying to understand. 1) Bob Dylan (Bracket B Winner) Gotta go with Bob. Huge fan of Neil, but come on! This is Dylan! The impact he's had on music is amazing. Folks like Batman have talked about it, but I remember when Dylan blew everyone away with his work with the Band. I still can't listen to much of his work without getting chills. Vs. 2) Neil Young (Bracket D Winner) Neil being here is no accident.
1) Jimi Hendrix (Bracket C Winner) ("Elvis was a hero to most...") 1) Bob Dylan (Bracket B Winner) (Young learnt everything he knows from Dylan...ask him)
are you saying i voted against kerry rather than for bush? nothing could be further from the truth... EDIT: not to derail the thread! btw, the way, deck's point about elvis' career being artistically truncated is a good one, but the larger point is neither one should have made the final four. poor bracketology IMHO!
man, im listening to the lionel richie definitive collection and there's like 20 songs and there all hits that i know by heart. easy, all night long, sail on, you are, say you-say me, stuck on you, dancing on the ceiling, ballerina girl, hello. for soft-rock, its some damn good stuff. guy was the top 40 king in the 80's. i didnt even think about him, but perhaps he should have been on here. im sitting here working unashamedly singing alog to "you are". i guess its not as bad as when i catch myself singing alog to rufus wainwright's "one man guy" though. who else thinks nicole richie is ALOT better looking than paris? and we all know she likes to party too (rehab!) when i was in middle school band our band director was trying to be "hip" and "with it" and had us playing dancing on the ceiling at the football games, which im sure pumped up the team and put the fear of god in the opponent.
