Okay, I saw this movie today and wished I hadn't. It was just so over the top with unrealistic special effects that sucked any charm out of it that it otherwise would have had. Just completely ridiculous. I could stand it for awhile but they just went ape**** on the digital effects, to the point where it was just stupid. Unlike Sin City, it had some charm and some funny moments, but they became sort of lost in a torrent of special effect masturbation.
I thought it was great. One of my favorites so far this year. I was expecting it to be another spoof comedy like Scary Movie, but it is so much more. The story was actually quite good, the fight scenes were amazing, and the lead actor was hilarious ("Have you ever seen a fist this big?"). There was a good balance between the comedy, action, and a little drama. Also, the acting by the mute girl was really good for someone that doesn't say anything the entire movie.
this movie is not really for ppl who loves real martial arts fighting.... to start off with.... Stephen Chow doesn't knows how to fight.... he is only a gymnast.....
Development? Its a kung fu movie!!!!!!!!! HAHAHAHAHA Cagey, now I have revenge for when I had my thumb broken during Damage, Inc.!!!!
Just saw it....we were cracking up the whole movie. Just go see it for the entertainment value. Who cares if it won't win any Oscars. Only bad thing was the two jackasses next to us who found it necessary to repeat every line.
In Kung Fu Hustle, the exaggerated special effect is meant to be a subtle part of the sarcasm on Chinese folk tales, at least that is how I see it. If you find it hard to agree with me, then try to treat this movie as a comical version of Spiderman or Superman. Talking about false portrayals of martial arts, to me, movies such as Karate Kid are much more annoying than the specials effects in Kung Fu Hustle. 99% of viewers will not believe any of the martial arts in Kung Fu Hustle, but they will think that a moive like Karate Kid is a close approximation of what Karate is about..... There is nothing dumber than that.
I don't know. With American superheros they at least give you some kind of scientific explanation (however implausable) as to why the character has superpowers, not just that they learned a few kung fu moves. The Karate Kid may not have been an accurate portrayal of karate, but at least they didn't have him flying a few thousand feet in the air, then coming down and attacking somebody like the guy in Kung Fu Hustle.
I wouldn't even consider it a kung fu movie. It's a comedy, first and foremost. And as a comedy, the movie succeeds. It’s hysterical. The fight scenes are there just for eye candy and to poke fun at movies like Crouching Tiger.
Awesome, awesome movie. Just fun as hell. It manages to be a comedy, a kung fu flick, make fun of kung fu flicks and other dramas (Matrix, Shining, etc.) and hyperactive all at the same time. Great time.
Wait, are you saying that Kung Fu Hustle is closer to real martial arts than karate kid? Focusing on the fight scenes, can you tell us what's wrong with Karate Kid and what's accurate with Kung Fu Hustle?
Yeah, where in real martial arts do people use the frog technique, or the one woman that just screamed at people and that somehow knocked them on their ass? Is it just because the characters in Kung Fu Hustle were Asian that made it seem more authentic?
I'm not even trying to say that Karate Kid is an accurate interpretation of Japanese culture and Karate. But that tournament looks like every martial arts tournament I've ever seen on tv. Kung Fu movies, well, the fighting is more enjoyable and exciting, but hardly ever realistic. I like Kung Fu movies, so before anybody thinks I'm bad mouthing them, my issue is with KD, who basically called a bunch of people dumb for a pretty dumb reason considering there aren't many people who will defend Karate Kid as being accurate. As for Kung Fu Hustle, I hope to see it today.
I don't think KD was saying that Kung Fu Hustle was more realistic than Karate Kid, just that it's less annoying. Because Kung Fu Hustle doesn't try to pretend like it’s a realistic portrayal of kung fu. The special effects (ie. characters running around like the roadrunner) make it blatantly obvious that it doesn’t take itself seriously. The movie embraces the silliness of kung fu movies. Whereas a movie like the Karate Kid seriously tries to convince people that karate really is learned by waxing a car. Complaining that Kung Fu Hustle is unrealistic is like complaining that The Naked Gun movies are an unrealistic portrayal of police detectives. You’re comparing apples to oranges.
I loved that part! I was laughing so hard I nearly choked. It's meant to be so ridiculously unrealistic that it's funny.
