Just happened to check the area briefs, and found this. I can't believe after all the initial hype, this is all the mention this conviction received.

Is the sentance fair? Should he have pled out?

Youth coach sentenced for giving beer to players

GALVESTON -- A former Little League coach who gave his players beer has been placed on two years' probation and fined $400 for the offense.

Gene Henry Austin II, 35, also is prohibited from coaching Little League again and must perform 80 hours of community service, according to terms of probation approved Friday by Galveston County Court Judge Mary Nell Crapitto.

Austin, an oil refinery worker who lives in Alvin, pleaded no contest in Crapitto's court to nine counts of making alcohol available to a minor. The offense is a Class C misdemeanor that carries a maximum penalty of 180 days in jail and a $2,000 fine.

Investigators said Austin bought beer and gave some to nine boys, ages 8 and 9, after a game. It is legal for parents to give their children alcoholic beverages in Texas.

Austin's team, the Santa Fe Angels, traveled to the game in a limousine. The trip was arranged by a parent of a team member.

Parents of boys involved complained to the Galveston County Sheriff's Department that the team stopped for picture-taking in the parking lot of Heartbreakers, a popular topless dancing club in Dickinson.

Yeah, everyone knows you pose for picture inside the topless bar. And giving a kid a swig of your beer, that is just not sanitary.

As long as this was his first and only foray into the world of utter stupidity, then the sentence seems fair. It just amazes me what some folks thought process must be. I cannot even fathom giving another person's 8 year old a swig of beer, much less having them pose for pictures outside a topless bar.
