Bracket A: 1) Elvis Presley 5) Paul Simon 3) Stevie Wonder 2) Bob Marley Bracket B: 1) Bob Dylan For all my love of Dylan, this is the toughest matchup. 4) Chuck Berry 3) John Lennon 2) Elton John Bracket C: 1) Jimi Hendrix 4) James Brown 6) Buddy Holly 2) Prince Bracket D: 1) Bruce Springsteen 4) David Bowie Death to the Boss. 6) Ray Charles 2) Neil Young
1) Elvis Presley 2) Bob Marley (only music world superstar from 3rd world country, he was much more than just an incredible musical artist) Bracket B: 1) Bob Dylan 3) John Lennon Bracket C: 4) James Brown (HARD , JB's career was just more stellar and culturally important imo) 2) Prince Bracket D: 4) David Bowie 6) Ray Charles
I've been admonished for not participating in these things, is the criteria who i like better, or who's the more influential, important artist? i'm going to go with the latter: Bracket A: 1) Elvis Presley- Elvis. simon's a nice songwriter, but Elvis lives! 5) Paul Simon 3) Stevie Wonder 2) Bob Marley- this is the toughest one for me- where would music be w/o stevie wonder's mid-70's albums? but marley launched the reggae revolution and stands as one of the most important artists in the rock era. Bracket B: 1) Bob Dylan- Dylan. berry was there at the creation, but dylan's ongs and lyrics defined a generation 4) Chuck Berry 3) John Lennon 2) Elton John- Elton. as a solo artist, lennon is vastly over-rated, while Elton John is the most important post-beatles british artist. Bracket C: 1) Jimi Hendrix 4) James Brown- Hendrix had one shining moment, but the longevity of James brown's career and his lasting influence on soul music stand out. 6) Buddy Holly 2) Prince- Prince is one of the most prolific artists of our generation. Buddy Holly's legacy, along with those of Hendrix and Lennon, has been mythologized by his early death Bracket D: 1) Bruce Springsteen 4) David Bowie- Bowie. the boss is agreat entertainer, but bowie's career spans four decades and includes a myriad of styles 6) Ray Charles 2) Neil Young- same as bowie. if you don't understand Neil young;s importance, listen to cortez the killer, or the closing medley of The Loner/Cinnamon Girl/Down by the River from the CD version of 4-way street. how they left this off the original LP is beyond me.
