The real reason is that at one time, there was another University in Ohio that called themselves Ohio State (I think it was Miami of Ohio). So OSU got their panties in a twist and made them change it. So when they say, "The" Ohio State University, they mean "The One and Only" Ohio State University. Basically it's some lame ego trip that they are engaging in. At least that's how I remember it. I recall hearing that story from an Buckeye alum, but the details are a bit fuzzy.
Not sure if anyone knew what I meant here... "The University" (located in Austin). They always refer to it that way. Probably because there supposedly is no other.
Also, while we are on the topic of Ohio State....watch out next season for this kid on their football team named Ted Ginn Jr. He saw some limited playing time last year, but showed he can be a big play guy (tied the NCAA mark for punt returns for touchdowns even though he only returned a very limited # of punts - 15 I believe). He has sick speed and moves...I haven't seen anyone like him in a while. He was a true freshman last year too, by the way.
Because that's its legal name and has been since 1878...? I've never understood why this was in any way difficult to grasp. And it didn't "start" with Orlando Pace. Ohio State has been using that particular self-reference in marketing and publicity for as long as I can remember, going back to WOSU broadcasts when I was a little kid. This was Ohio State's logo from around 1987 until the mid to late 1990s (in fact I think some of its academic functions still use this): There are plenty of BS explanations as to why Ohio State uses that title, but it boils down to a matter of taste. "The Ohio State University" has a euphonious quality that the alternatives lack. That's why they use it.
Damnit yipengzhao, I come back from vacation to THE most useless thread in awhile, then again I havent been to the GARM yet.
Isn't it funny how details can be a bit fuzzy? Why can't details be warm? This way, you get "warm and fuzzy" details... I ALSO recall this song, however, that's been translated into a Spanish Reguetón (that's "Latino" Reggae) called "Qué Rico Gusanito" that was the original "Nobody Loves Me, Everybody Hates Me, so I just go and eat a worm..." Such song ends with "itsy bitsy fuzzy wuzzy worm." It could have also been "itsy bitsy warm-and-fuzzy worm." And m_cable could have had his "warm and fuzzy itsy bitsy" details. But then, he wouldn't have fuzzy details about recalling a story from a Buckeye Alum. Speaking of which, did anybody catch "Total Recall" on Telefutura?
I cannot help but turn my erudite, sober, intellectually inquisitive nature on topics such as this. Would that I were more whimsically oriented, all the more likely to engage in what I believe you call "jokering". Alas.
Dear God no! Actually, I too was glad with Brian's post on the first page - I know that yipengzhao didn't mean to imply that Orlando Pace spearheaded the "movement" for Ohio State to become The Ohio State University when it has been that for 130 years. At least I hope he knew that although after reading his post that gives props to Pace, I am not sure.
I didn't imply anything. I just wanted to know why they use the long E and emphasize the syllable. The other instance I know of is that they will alway call "metabolic syndrome" "the metabolic syndrome" but they don't pronounce "the" hard in that case. Now if somebody had just told me OSU made their name "THE OSU" in 18XX and it was because it sounded good. Then that's all I needed to know. I don't know why Mr. BK needed to be so uppity about it.
Who said that you implied it - if anything, I said you did the opposite. It was just the way you delivered that post that made it confusing. Go back and read that post again from a lurker's viewpoint.
