As much as I'd rather play the Sonics than the Mavs, I'd rather us go into the playoffs with momentum instead of tanking games.
Let's just keep up this intensity and we'll win out. Look at how we did against the hottest team in the league tonight.

No the game we absolutely need to tank is the clipper game if we want easy route in the playoff. See my reasoning in the king tie breaker thread.

Gonna have to lose the next two games for 5th seeding and hope for the best. Very unlikley under JVG but good time to give Baker, Rybo & Padge more game time.

They will not tank the Clipper game. If it's a blowout, T-Mac will get plenty of rest. We will win.

If the Kings lose to the Jazz on Monday, finalizing our #5 seed, we could see anything against Seattle. My guess is neither team will try very hard and both will play uninspired ball. JVG will get 2 techs and get tossed so he doesn't have to sit through it (and also to set the tone in preparing for Game 1 with Dallas).

I vote for tanking. Mavs are obviously better than the Sonics and we don't have anyone to match up with Dirk.

The problem is that I'm sure the Kings are thinking the same thing.

Yonkers is absolutely right. The only way to go into the playoffs is go with an winning attitude. Tanking might give the matchup that we want against the Sonics but it will be self defeating.
We have to try and beat both Clippers and the Sonics.

You guys are looking at this all wrong. I think we can all agree that the name of the game for playoff success is avoid the Spurs as long as you can. Mission probably accomplished there with tonight's Nuggets win. I agree that the Mavs are more of a challenge than the Sonics, but they are by no means unbeatable in my opinion. The 6th seed offers the easier 1st round match-up with the Sonics, but a date with the Spurs in round 2. The 5th seed offers a more difficult, but winnable match-up with the Mavs in the first round followed by a winnable 2nd round match-up against the Suns with whom the Rockets split the season series and who we all know may have had a fantastic regular season, but are unproven and really unexperienced for the most part post-season wise so its hard to tell whether their regular season success will translate into post-season success especially when you consider that the Suns are all offense and no defense much like the Mavs teams of the past few years. I'll take my chances with the 5th seed and a shot at the conference finals, an opportunity that I do not believe exists with a potential second round date with the Spurs as the 6th seed.

If we think bigger than just the first round, maybe #5 is better. Would you rather play the Sonics then the Spurs, or the Mavericks then the Suns? If the Rox are able to beat Dallas and don't get too nicked up, I would make us the favorite against the Suns.

Maybe Denver or Seattle can do this year what Denver (with Mutombo) did for us in 1994 when they took out Seattle.

I would not say we intentionally tank a game, but it definitely does no harm to rest some of our starters in one of those games.... So that they can better prepare for the playoff.

    Does it sound better?? ;)

Tank what? Tanking doesn't guarentee a 6th seed. Even if we get 6th seed and beat Sonics, we'll face Spurs with Duncan. Sonics + Spurs isn't necessarily easier than Suns +Mavs.

Just win as much as possible.

There are only two games remaining. We're tied with Sacramento at the moment, and have a one-game lead over Denver. We hold tiebreakers over both Denver (head-to-head) and Sacramento (conference record).

Even if a 3-way tie happened, we'd still be #5:
    - Houston head-to-head against Nuggets/Kings - 4-3
    - Sacramento head-to-head against Rockets/Nuggets - 4-3
    - Denver head-to-head against Rockets/Kings - 3-4

However, we have a better conference record than the Kings, so we move in front of them.

The only three ways we get #6 are:
    1. Kings win out, and we lose one
    2. Kings win out, Denver loses at least one, and we lose two.
    3. Nuggets win out, and both we and the Kings lose two.

Any other scenario will land us at either #5 or #7. I might not have thought it through completely, but I think our chances of getting the 6-seed are pretty slim.

Tank the clipper game. We will have a good chance to get 6th. Not saying I like the idea.

I always felt JVG tanked our first game against the Heat last season when his brother was in deep trouble.

Whatever JVG may be, he's got enough class to never do that. There are coaches who would, but I don't think JVG would have the respect of his players if he was even suspected of that.

You never, ever, EVER tank down the stretch going into the postseason...EVER. You use this time to improve your game, gain chemistry and boost confidence. You want to roll into the playoffs playing great. At that point, you won't care who you play, just so long as you play.

The Mavs are not close to unbeatable. There were no guarantees against Seattle. Just win and take your chances.
