Did I miss something last night during the Sonics game? I could have sworn I saw the Rockets had 88-7? lead with about a minute left in the game and Tmac went to the line for 2 free throws. This was before Yao's last 2 free throws. Tmac made both and I heard Bill say that gave him 40 for the night. I then walked away from the TV for maybe a minute, and when I came back the Rockets were back down 88. Now, I see Tmac had only 38 in the final box score. Was I just dreaming, or did they take some points away?
Not dreaming. The refs (whom I am hating more and more with every passing game) made a mistake and thought it was 5th team foul, when it was only 4th. So they gave T-Mac the 2 FTs, he made them, but then they realized their mistake, and basically cancelled the FTs. I am not sure, but I would say this was the first time EVER such a thing happened.
I wondered about that - I heard the explanation... but I was not on the TV with TIVO so I could not check the score - did the refs lower the Rox score - or just cancel Tmac's points in the box score if they reduced the score - that could have impacted the game
Here's what I don't get. Even if they were right, and they never should have awarded T-Mac the free-throws, wouldn't the Rockets have had the ball with a chance to score? So by taking away the free-throws, they took away a possession that the Rocekts deserved. I was shocked. I had never, never, never ever heard of something like that happening.
The Rockets did get the ball back in that posession, and if I remember right, we ended up with another 2 FTs after next foul, just not from T-Mac
So if we would have won that game by 1 point, and since they took away t-macs last 2 points, would we have lost that game or what?
Had the game restarted when the refs changed the call? If the game had restarted I don't think they could take the points away. If it had not restarted then it should have been our possession. Either way the refs were so wrong, very wrong and extremely wrong.
Yes, the game HAD restarted. We came back from a timeout after YAO made 2 free throws and they announced 2 points had been taken away. If that was the case, then the LEAST they could do would be to award Houston possession of the basketball, which they did not. They took points off the board AND gave Seattle the basketball game. If this woulda been a close game, all hell would have broken loose. Instead it's just chalked up as another bout of poor officiating from mindless stools in zebra outfits.
Honestly? I have NEVER seen the NBA officiating as bad as it is now. I mean it was bad before, but it has never been worse than this season. The NBA has to address this issue somehow, but I doubt they will
I've seen a lot of games, many I'd like to forget, and I've never seen it. Anyone else? Is this really a "first?"
At least they got it right in the end. Imagine if the other team had gotten extra FTs we would def want them to be not counted.
it sounds like there is a discrepancy regarding whether or not the Rockets received possesion of the ball after the free throws were removed. can somebody verify this? did they give the Rockets a free possesion or did they simply reward them with the ball after the next play, which they should have done anyway?
I don't know why they did that. It baffles me. The game was out of hand so it didn't really matter. I don't understand the possesion part but don't think they would have done that if the game was on the line. That just seems like taking back a bad call. Refs ALWAYS make bad calls but don't take them back(unless it's a last second shot at the end of half or game).
Except...assuming that the Rockets didn't get an extra possession, they didn't get it right. There are conflicting reports in this thread. Some people here seem to think that the points were immediately taken away and a new possession given. Others have said that the points were taken away on a subsequent possession and that we didn't get a double possession. If that is the case, then we got screwed. Essentially, the officials would have goofed...but then goofed the other way in correcting the initial mistake. And in doing so, penalize the team that didn't commit the foul. I didn't see the game...so I don't know. Didn't see anything on the front page that addressed this specific issue either.
