Would this be a powerful twin tower system or what? From ESPN Insider: Oh, what a tangled web Kings free-agent Chris Webber weaves. After spending much of last season complaining about the small stage and lack of soul in Sacramento, C-Webb now seems to have his sights tightly focused on the Alamo. A league source told ESPN Insider this morning that Webber is becoming more and more intrigued with the San Antonio Spurs. The Spurs have diverted almost all of their attention to an all-out pitch for C-Webb. They sent him a videotape over the weekend detailing the virtues of living in San Antonio and playing in the Alamodome. Though he still has a meeting scheduled with Pistons president Joe Dumars on Wednesday, Webber has basically narrowed his vision to the Spurs and Kings, the source told Insider. Of course Webber seems to change his mind about every other day, so be careful what you read into this. Who knows, this may just be C-Webb's flavor of the day. What we do know is that the allure of playing next to Tim Duncan apparently has gotten Webber's attention, even if San Antonio isn't known for its soul food. According to the source, the Spurs feel Webber would be powerful incentive for Duncan to stay in San Antonio long-term. Given the choice between Webber or David Robinson and Derek Anderson, the source told Insider that the Spurs would take Webber. That's got to be bad news for both Robinson and Anderson. The same league source told Insider that if the Spurs land Webber they would try to work out sign-and-trades for Anderson and Robinson. The Spurs could even end up swapping Anderson for Kings free-agent Doug Christie if Webber decides he wants to play in San Antonio. The Spurs love Christie's defense and he could like be had for a few million cheaper than Anderson (see Christie story below). ------------------ Draftsource.net-- the premier source for draft info. Also, verse, would Webber count as a major free agent? ------------------ Draftsource.net-- the premier source for draft info. Profiles, rankings, mock drafts, and more! The Mo Taylor Fan Site
Webber on the Spurs?!?!? and if they get Christie?!?!?!?! The Lakers are in BIG trouble!!! There is a god!!! ------------------ "I look kind of dumpy. Look at my butt. Bite your tongue! San Antonio IS IN OUR DIVISION! Does your hatred for the Lakers run as deep as your love for the Rockets? It's close in my case, but the love I have for Houston consumes my very soul and being. ------------------ My doctor says I am bipolar. I am going to get a second opinion. Hoop-T, It is pretty damn close. The Rockets won't contend for another year or two, and the Lakers will. You win in the short-term, but lose in the long-term. Don't know what I'd do... ------------------ Draftsource.net-- the premier source for draft info. Profiles, rankings, mock drafts, and more! The Mo Taylor Fan Site
That is truly scary! Going up against the Spurs and Lakers would virtually assure us of not seeing the NBA finals for a very long time. At least with only the Lakers you could hope for an injury to one of their stars. Guess that is the reason they weren't too anxious to pay D-Rob big $$$.
nah. j/k. in the immortal words of Flava Flav: DONT' BELIEVE THE HYPE!!! seriously, if you remember, i suggested this long ago. but i also predicted that the spurs wouldn't get him, since they are a 2nd rate organization in a 2nd rate city. just call me verstradamus. ------------------ here's a verse: hating this name is a full time job for me; shandon in the nba is highway robbery!
I don't know how San Antonio is a 2nd rate organizaton considering they've gotten to 3 conference Finals and won a NBA Championship the last 7 years, and they did get a top notch FA in Derek Anderson, and have another FA in Chris Webber looking at them hard, so the Spurs are for real unfortunately. As for being a 2nd rate city, I wouldn't touch that considering the number of famous people that have come out of there. Webber and Christie would not only put them over the top against the Lakers, but would give them a young nucleus for years to come, something the Lakers don't have after Shaq and Kobe. ------------------ "Instruments are like women: After a while, you want to make love to another." - Nicolas Godin of the musical duo Air
Webber and Duncan? Isn't that redundant? They'd just get in each other's way. ------------------ All hail Fadeaway's Cyberfish -- your 2000-2001 BobFinn* Fantasy Basketball League Champions!
Duncan + Webber =less boring spurs (and that's fer sure) ------------------ www.expage.com/saveourunis
I read somewhere that if they renounced all free agents they could come up with close to 21 million in Cap room to sign Webber, Anderson and Robinson. Then again i don't know the breakdowns Imagine: Center: Robinson PF: Webber SF: Duncan (Don't Laugh They Experimented it last year and could again w/ Drob and Duncans Agility and quickness) SG: Derek Anderson PG: Antonio Daniels Bench: Jaren Jackson, Terry Porter, Draft Pick, Malik Rose and Pick up someone with the exception. Whoa... ------------------
It generally makes a lot of sense from both sides. Sac could then trade Dr Rob for more future (because they would have no chance to get by LA/SA any time soon) or keep him for PR reasons. Duncan/Webber would give the Spurs a chance to surpass Shaq/Kobe. But until the other pieces of the puzzle are in place I would not say they have "surpassed" the Lakers. I don't think a supporting cast of Daniels, Christie and Ferry would be enough. Right now this could all be talk though, Webber holds all the cards. I don't know why any Rockets fan "hates" Spurs, or Suns for that matter. We have had some of our most inspiring triumphs at their expense. Throw some pity there way. Now Seattle or Utah, you want to talk about "disdain" or maybe even "hate". [This message has been edited by Desert Scar (edited July 10, 2001).]
Ah ok verse! ------------------ "Instruments are like women: After a while, you want to make love to another." - Nicolas Godin of the musical duo Air
To me, SA vs Houston is like A&M vs the Longhorns.SA is more of a rival simply because because its within the state. If your go check out the Rockets play in SA, you'll see. Man, they're fans are hostile towards the Rockets and their fans. Of course it probably stems from 95.If SA got Webber and had to give up Robinson and Anderson. I don't think they would be that much better. They play the same positions and they're still old basically at most other positions and lacking great guard play, which is needed to beat the LA. Besides Webber is not close to being the defensive presence that Robinson is, even his later years. As it is now, Robinson and Duncan do a pretty good job on Shaq.I don't think Shaq would be as concerned with Webber and Duncan as opposed to the twin towers, who have generally given his a little trouble. ------------------
Well, the latest is that if Webber is indeed on his way to SA, DRob will take less to make it happen. As for the "which city has the biggest !@#$" argument, these teams are out on the road half the time during the season. SA has its attributes and problems, as does HTown. About the only player I recall ever having a major problem with the city itself was Mo Cheeks. The hope now is that they can retain DRob & DA and bring in Webber. If not DA, they will look for a less expensive alternative. The Spurs basically have lined up Eddie Robinson as plan #2, should Webber flake out. Under that scenario, DA and DRob are back, and they may use some cap space on a reserve bigman. At least they will have landed a small forward with healthy knees (unlike Elliott) or with knees (unlike Danny Ferry). So we shall see. With Duncan a free agent in 2 years and this being the largest amount of cap space ever, I hope they land Webber. ------------------
Or am much more intriguing scenario would be if DRob and Derek got annoyed at the Spurs and signed elsewhere while SA was still courting Webber and then Webber appropriately signs elsewhere leaving the Spurs with...well...just Tim Duncan. ------------------ Mr. President. No man thinks more highly than I of three legged cows. They deserve to live. On my own part, I consider it as nothing less than a question of reason. Cows with three legs are good. We are apt to shut our eyes against a painful truth : three-legged cows are better. They are better because the meat on them is better. The steaks are more tender. Three-legged cows tend not to wander as much. These cows could be the symbol of our country. The world would look upon us with great respect. They will want our cows and pay good money for them. The cows could symbolize freedom and hard work and three legs are better than four. They are meant for us; they can be meant for no other.
I love Houston my native home as much as the next guy, but Shandon Anverson (haha ), what makes San Antonio so bad. I've been there a few times and the party atmoshpere was pretty cool. You got El Mercado, River Walk, Tower of America, Alamo, Alamo Dome, Sea World... it's a nice place.
