It makes sense because it ends the fight faster with more control and less risk of injury to yourself. Its easier to learn to kick and punch but it takes a long time to develop the skill of a knockout strike and is difficult to execute on a strong fast opponent. In a confined limited space a grappler has an advantage over a striker. I used to watch the UFC in the earlier years but hadn't seen it in awhile until I watched the fight in February. The one thing I noticed was no leg locks even when the fighters were in positions where they were open to them. I'm wondering if the UFC has changed its rules to ban them or are the fighters just not into legs locks these days.
Try watching pride which allows fighters to be kicked on the head while they are on the ground, its pretty brutal.
goin to the ground limits your chance of getting knocked out. i suppose leg locks are just to hard to execute, so an armbar or choke is usually perfered. i have tried doin leg holds in sparring sessions, trust me if u dont control the guy's legs u will get kicked in the face.
I've never paid attention to what they wear inside the ring (biker shorts, or whatever). But yes I would rather them fight with a shirt on or a Gi. RM95....you are so gay.
I know I've been kicked in the face a few times trying a bad leg lock! Are you a Judoka? Leg locks like anything else just require training and practice and I've noticed if you practice them a lot they are as available and easy to execute as any other submission technique. If you study Sombo (Russian wrestling) they don't choke but do leg locks and can show you a ton of ways to get them.
They don't wear shirts or uniforms because they don't want their opponent to use it to choke them. The less their opponent has to grab onto, the better.
genki sudo from pride is my favorite fighter. very entertaining and the guy is like my size, except he is way more cut and this dude took out that fat tub of goo boxer Butterbean.
K-1 was awesome in the late 90's, but the last few years they have turned it into a circus freak show loaded with worked fights, washed up boxers, fat sumo wrestlers, and other guys who have no business being there replete with awful japanese judging. Very sad. THe only thing still good about it is the K-1 MAX (middleweight) division - Buakaw Por Pramuk is the man. For MMA PRIDE is definitely superior. The Middleweight GP later this month should be awesome. As for the Ultimate Fighter, I like MMA but that show totally sucked and was a little too homoerotic. The fighters had heart but they will have limited success with the big guys.
Ryan Fletcher aka Rich Franklin. Shamrock is 41 years old and does not have the same reflexes notwithstanding Joe the idiot Rogan's hyperbole; the sport has passed him by.
