They don't need to buy him out. Buying him out wouldn't wipe away his cap hit anyway, just spread it out which wouldn't make sense. What the Blazers could and will do is decline the team option year on the contract, thus making him a free agent and wipe his contract off the books. After that the Blazers can still orchestrate a sign and trade if they so choose, since they should still have his bird rights.
If his options are retiring or playing for us, then you'd think we have him over a barrel dont you. I mean, he'd be doing it because he wants to play and he wants to win, not because he is out to make as much money as he can. If thats the case, then surely he must be aware that the less they pay him the more they can afford to spend on supporting cast around him. I think he'd be great coming off the bench to give the offence a lift.
Oh it is possible, but the Blazers will have to pick up the team option (paying him $13 mil next season), and we dupe them into taking back Vin Baker, Spoon, and Moochie off our hands If they do that, then by all means, I would LOVE to take NVE for our bench trash
Keep in the possibility that we could draft a PG, in which case that leaves us with Sura, James, Moochie, Ward and whoever we draft all under contract. That leaves little room to add a player like NVE, even at the "hometown discount."
One might say I'm fairly confident in my knowledge of the workings of the cap. And, my ability to read. From the article....The Blazers hold a $12.7 million option for next season, but it's likely they will use Van Exel's contract as trade bait. Only way? Gee, could I have been referring to a scenario where the Blazers opt not to take Van Exel's contract for next year? That's not a buyout. There is no precedent for a team opting into a final year of a deal at high cost for the express purpose of a trade. I challenge you to find one example of a team exercising it's option with the intent of trading the player.
True, but that's invasive ... twice. Once to harvest and once to inject. The electrical stimulation os just some electrodes and is effective in only 4 months.
NVE reminds me of Vernon Maxwell. An incredibly streaky player with unbelievable range that plays with a lot of heart and a chip on his shoulder. This team needs a Maxwell, NVE is the closest thing available. If we can get him cheap because he wants to come here then it's a no brainer.
STAY AWAY..... I'm not saying NVE is as bad as Rod was, but you get the idea... At the time I still thought when we traded for DEKE it was a good move, he had some game left.... NVE is starting to look WAY to slow for a guard...
I am not sure where NVE would fit in with this team. PG: Sura, James SG: Wesley, Barry Do we need another scoring PG on this team like NVE? I would be in favor of him if we didnt have James, but I think what we need more is either a pure passing PG OR a SG with some quickness and height that can play the 2/3.
I guess if the Nets came calling and wanted out of Kidd's contract, THEN Portland would exercise the option on NVE. Other than that, I think old Nick will find himself unemployeed. For the Vet min, he's a good pickup. You never know if Sura's back problem will come back, and he would give the guys a decent player to practice against. Sometimes it is a not a matter of how great the player is, but how much your other players can learn from him that matters.
