Florida eyes allowing residents to open fire whenever they see threat

Wed Apr 6, 4:11 PM ET U.S. National - AFP

MIAMI (AFP) - Florida's legislature has approved a bill that would give residents the right to open fire against anyone they perceive as a threat in public, instead of having to try to avoid a conflict as under prevailing law.

Outraged opponents say the law will encourage Floridians to open fire first and ask questions later, fostering a sort of statewide Wild West shootout mentality. Supporters argue that criminals will think twice if they believe they are likely to be promptly shot when they assault someone.

Republican Governor Jeb Bush, who has said he plans to sign the bill, says it is "a good, commonsense, anti-crime issue."

Current state law allows residents to "shoot to kill if their property, such as their home or car, is invaded by an unknown assailant."

But it also states that if a resident is confronted or threatened in a public place, he or she must first try to avoid the confrontation or flee before taking any violent step in self defense against an assailant.

The bill, supported by the influential National Rifle Association, was approved by both houses of the Republican-run legislature on Tuesday.

Better get those assault rifles ready even when you're heading to Disneyworld, because any black, Latino, or non-white person can snatch your purse away from ya! ;)

    WOW...just Wowey-wow

"Good, commonsense, anti-crime issue" Jeb...what should we expect from a govenor named Jeb.

I own/collect firearms, I enjoy hunting and shooting but I can't IMAGINE a state giving carte blanche to citizens to shoot anyone that they feel is threatning.

I wonder what law-enforcement groups and unions feel about this measure?

How about the people who shot an exchange student who went up to a house to ask for directions? Would it be legal to shot anyone approaching your house? This is crazy, remind me to never move there.

Perhaps the police should be scrapped in Florida... cuz when everyone has his/her own assault rifle, then who needs those damn cops? ;)

If you want gun control pass a law to open the door for all kinds of abuse so we can then clamp down after the obvious abuses and lawsuits and media hysteria ensues and get what we really want... gun confiscation.

If Jebb is for gun owners, and citizens have the right to bear arms don't pass anymore legislation. Let the good people keep their guns and use them wisely.

Damn, I had no idea the influence bamaslammer had. He moved to Florida and in a year, give or take, the state is about to turn into an open warzone.

I think at any perceived threat violence is always the answer. Violence should be the first resort whenever possible.

I'm glad that the party of family values is running things so well, and setting a such a great example.

This comic strip was in this weeks (April 7th edition) of the Austin Chronicle.

And now you can get shot for giving someone a dirty look or not. As long as it's a perceived threat. Think of all of those senior citizens that think that the kids are always out to get them.

EDIT...OOPS. Hit reply instead of edit. Sorry.

Tennessee is in the middle of passing a bill that would allow people with licenses to carry concealed weapons to carry them into nightclubs, talk about a terrible move.

They just won't want to pull the plug on those who do not die but are just mortally wounded.
