Your telly could be going smelly. The Times of London reported that Sony scientists in San Diego have spent five years developing a device that will send out ultrasound signals to the brain, triggering neuron releases that would give television viewers a sense of smell or taste of what they were watching. Reaction to the news was swift. The thing isn't even close to hitting the market yet, and Clippers fans are already demanding that the pseudo-sniffer come with a disable switch http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/sports/2002234736_chat08.html?syndication=rss So what shows would you want to smell and/or not smell?
That'd help out all the companies who advertise food on TV, obviously. Seeing certain fast food places or whatever restaurant on TV late at night or at some random time can make you develop a craving and need to go out and get it. Putting smell, the most _____ sense (can't think of the word) would seal the deal and definitely entice people into going out and getting their product. I doubt they do this smellevision thing efficiently, but time will tell...
I wonder, would that open up the door to lawsuits? It's one thing to dress the food up for commercials, but to actually arouse other senses seems shady.
