imo, slightly overated but given the depleted status of centers, I guess he is due his big money. The numbers seem to support his status as an elite center such as the rebounding and blocks, but if you look closely you see the 13.5 rebounds and 2.71 blocks? (numbers may be slightly askew) and correlate that to how Dream compared just a few years ago and it seems without a doubt the defensive numbers are a wash (comparing the two.) and Hakeem's offensive game was definitely better....So why is Mutombo stringing together all those consecutive defensive player of the year awards? Yea, maybe he does deserve it, but I think the favor is his because of his lacking offensive game. Therefore it seems he is known as a "defensive stud" when this award comes around and now he is getting prime jack just because of this stupid rationale (imho, of course [IMG] )...

He can single handedly save a poor rebounding team or give interior D. Mutombo is the greatest role player of the 90's. Or was Pippen a role player? It doesnt matter we all hate him anyways.

I think Mutombo is GREATLY underrated. Nowadays people mostly look at offense. Mutombo isn't a great offensive player so people think he is overrated. But Mutombo is as good defensively as most anybody else is offensively. He's a great shotblocker, and can change an entire team's offense, he is a great one-on-one defender, he is a great rebounder, he is tough physically and mentally, has unbelievable stamina, and fit in on almost any team. He is an adequate scorer, and I think he would have worked out better in the late 80s to mid 90s because he wouldn't have been required to score as much. Other then the fact that Mutombo isn't a great scorer, he's a decent one, I don't see that many weaknesses on him.

I agree. He's a good shooter, a good rebounder, and good at blocking shots. He brings confidence and swagger. He brings intimidation. He runs the floor. I don't see one weakness to be honest, other than he's not Shaquille Oneal. But as of right now, he's one of the elite Centers even you don't like him.

I gained a lot of repect for Mutombo watching the finals, even though i had seen him quite a bit in Atlanta. He changes a game probably more than any other player (besides Shaq). I saw him on Conaan and he is just a great guy, and his voice is fun to imitate.

In my opinion, the quality of NBA big men has dropped considerably in the last ten years. The great ones have gotten old, and nobody is there to take their place. Motumbo's awards and big contract are one of the results of this trend.
