Sorri if there is already a post on this, but I couldnt find it and was wondering if ne1 had a recap. Heard on drive home that van gundy was gonna be on the show around 6:15 but did not get a chance to listen. Did anyone catch it?
JVG'S EXCUSES AFTER EVERY GAME WE LOSE ARE LAME! COUGH.. COUGH.. UGHHH.. Interviewer: Coach, what happened? JVG: We didn't play any defense. Cough. Interviewer: What else? JVG: That's it, not much else to say. (Clears throat) Interviewer: OK. Thanks coach. SHUUUUUTTTTT UPPPP!
those aren't excuses, in fact i'm willling to bet in all of jvg's caoching career he's never begun to make an excuse for his team's play.
He says more. He makes a few valid points in an interview and I think he leaves out a lot and the rest of his excuses are lame. He can do an all around better job IMO. He is too overconfident- "we have more than enough to get the job done." I don't think his reason for saying this is because he is trying to boost the moral of the team. I don't think he is a great coach (good but not great) and I think he is fooling himself among other things.
What's he going to say? "The season is over, I'm sure Les won't mind me suggesting to you folks tosave your money, we've got no chance in the playoffs"?
Steve Francis will be on Jim Rome tomorrow also (Friday). It will be intresting to hear his takes on his current playoff situation.
I dunno, man, I think JVG tells it like it is. If he doesn't like something about the way the team plays, he'll let you know about it. He doesn't make any personal attacks on the players. Rather, he'll tell you what about the coaching strategy didn't work. Like double teaming some guy left too many shooters way too open or settling for outside jumpers made the offense too stagnant. I appreciate interviews with JVG. He won't give you any inside scoop on the team or juicy dirt, but he'll give you the low-down on what he would have strategically liked to do better that game.
Anyone got an update of when he is coming on? I think JVGs pesimistic attitude has infected the team. I remember shortly before the lsoing streak he was talking about how he wasnt ready to admit we would be in the playoffs, and we could tank liek Memphis. Voila!
I don't think that on him, I think that's on the team. He was telling the team that they couldn't rest on their laurels or else they would be in trouble.
if he says we can get the job done with what we have....then how is he making excuses? if the other team scores 122 points and he says that we didn't play defense....how is he making an excuse? if anything, he is abolishing all use of excuses and just plain saying this team isn't doing what its capable of doing.
Not much JVG has talked about today that is out of the ordinary... He thinks our PGs should take the lead and seek out Yao more than they do now. He praised Wesley for doing well in that aspect last night, and he said the best passers to Yao "by far" on consistent basis are T-Mac and Barry. When Matt J asked him why not give more playing time/chance to other PFs to prove themselves, JVG basically said, "I see these guys play and in practice, I know what they are capable of and everything, you know what I am saying? So I know what they are capable of." So basically JVG dismissed this question. JVG said that he still doesn't think the Rockets have secured the playoffs, saying that realistically when you look at Minny's remaining schedule, it is highly possible that they won't lose more than a game the rest of the way (he said probably against Denver). Then he said when you look at Houston's schedule, we have very tough schedule left against top teams, and it ain't gonna be easy at all to win games the rest of the way. He also said that in his opinion, Marion is the MVP of his team, and in fact, he thinks he should be a strong candidate in the MVP race in the league. He says that it is important for the Rockets against the Suns to go to the FT line to slow down the pace of the game. Moreover, and this is the best part, he compared living in NYC and Houston, and he said that he enjoyed living in Houston more than he ever thought he would. He said he was impressed by "how many strip malls are in Houston", and said he likes the "texture" of the town. Also, he mentioned the difference between people in NYC and people down here, he said Houstonians are "very nice people", and he was making a comparison of how in his current neighborhood people ask him how he is doing all the time, while he wasn't really used to that because in NYC when someone asks you that you think: "Why is he asking me that?!" and you tend to look at it from an angle of suspicion. He then said, "I love Houston, I really consider it home". He said he doesn't think the age-limit thing is important, and pointed out that players like "Garnett, McGrady, Lebron" don't get in off-court trouble, and then added "and Kobe too...well...I guess Kobe has been in trouble, but that was last year" (It was funny how he retracted the Kobe thing ) He will start Weatherspoon against Marion tomorrow, saying that the last time he started Bowen it missed up that energy off the bench Bowen provided. He said he will stick with his normal lineup this time around. He is apparently a big baseball fan, so he was asking around about the Astros and wanted to know how they are doing, when Berkman will be back, How did Pettite do, etc. (I guess him and McGrady can enjoy a few games together at the park in the off-season, since they are apparently big baseball fans). That was it...
JVG-to-English interpretation: "Baker sucks during practice. What reason do I have to think he wouldn't suck during a game?"
