Wow, Sean May of Carolina is a beast. I've only seen two players that know how to use their body and size like him. He reminds me of Shaq and Barkley how he just throws his opponents around... but he can dribble, pass and shoot freethrows which just makes him that much better.

He has the skills that Shaq has now, with the difference being he can do them now while it took shaq 5-6 years to get them... he doesn't have the size of Shaq but the lottery team that gets him better count their blessings.

That's the same thing people said about Clarence Weatherspoon

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say he's 10 times the player ol' Clarence ever was or will be... not that it takes much.

I'm not so sure his game will translate. Right now, he's carrying too much weight and his bulldozing style will get offensive fouls called on him in the league.

He is a fantastic college player though.

yeah i hate to say that someone getting "star" calls in college but may tonight was able to bulldoze over people to score while it seemed anyone even touching may would be called for a foul.

Augustine the big-10 tournament mvp played only like 9 total minutes because of the touch fouls called on him

10x better than a former 18 and 10 player? Wow, this guy must be the next Wilt Chamberlain.

Oh please. If he had any game, it wouldn't be a problem. Augustine is garbage, and May showed why. He's more towards Elton Brand's level than anyone.

"touch fouls"??? i think you mean stupid fouls. Augustine was reaching instead of keeping his feet busy.

From the replays all of his fouls were... fouls. They were just stupid "Yao Fouls" as the kids are calling them these days.

    For real.

    Spoon is a sad story.
    Years 1-4: 17 and 9
    Year 5: 12 and 8
    Years 6-10 :9 and 7
    Years 11-now: 5 and 3

Year 5, where the intial drop off from potential young star to role player happened, happens to coincide with Allen Iverson's rookie year. Spoon's shots per game go from 16 in 94-95 to 10, and he never gets to double figure FGA again in his career.

Spoon also became a poster boy for the dangers of long guaranteed money. He made a big stink and had a mini-hold out during training camp (October 1994), and got his rich deal. After that, he slowly began to let himself go, and his game followed.

May should be fine in the league as a back up big man at least, but whether he becomes a premire post almost entirely depends on whether he'll get himself into and stay in NBA shape.

What real competition has he faced? All the best big men have already defected to the NBA.

I'm not saying I wouldn't take him -- but I'm not ready to annoint someone who can roll over the B team of big men (meaning the A team is in the NBA)

I guess you weren't there for his 20+ point and rebound games against Duke? May is as consistent as it comes, he's better than Marvin Williams right now and Marvin it said to be a top 3 pick, mostly on potential. Anyone who drafts May is getting an Elton Brand-type player, not a sub.

Comparing him to Spoon rather than Brand? Yeah, that's more like it

May has better hands than probably 80-90% of the big men in the NBA right now, he is a good rebounder, great scorer - knows how to use his body.

I think people need to recheck the numbers Spoon was able to put up early in his career. His first 4 or so years were very, very good.

May's a tank (in a good sense). He just has crazy strength. I'm not sure what he'll do in the NBA, but he seems to have soft hands and good touch, so he'll find a spot.

Good point. Outside of Shelden Williams of Duke (who he has owned), May has only had one other game against an elite big man. Here's his boxscore against Emeka Okafor last year:
    8 points, 3-14 shooting, 11 rebounds, 4 PF.

He's certainly improved since then, but it would be unwise to annoint him as the next Elton Brand quite yet. Remember, Brand average at or near 20 and 10 his rookie season.

Just to add, Okafor's line against May was:
    29 points, 12-18 shooting, 13 rebounds

I agree that he will find his place in the NBA, I'm just not so sure it will be a prolific one. He'll need to work into better shape and work on some crafty moves. He doesn't really strike me as overly athletic, so he'll have to out-think his opponents.

Seems like I recall that one of May's protests about playing for Doherty was that he wanted to play the 4 rather than the 5.

Even though I'm in ACC country, I kind of found myself rooting for the Illini, however I'm glad for Roy Williams. He seems like a classy guy who has earned all the accolades that now come his way.
