The Rockets Atrocious Record at Home This Year. What Gives?

Just looking at the records of the (probable) WC playoff teams this year and noticed that we now have the dubious honor of having the most home losses out of any of them. Even the great teams has a hiccup every once in a while, but among our 14 home losses this year, 6 of them are what I would consider inexcusable:

    T-Wolves
    Lakers
    Knicks
    Bobcats
    Spazz (w/o Boozer)
    Hornets

If we win those 6 games, we're the 3rd seed instead of the 6th seed right now. I'm not counting the games that we probably should have won like the Pacers or Celtics or Nuggets (when they were sucking).

At the same time, we have the 3rd best road record of the WC playoff teams. In fact, the Spurs are the only WC playoff team we haven't beaten on the road this year.

So why is it that we can't seem to get "up" for home games this year while playing like world beaters on the road? Is it the atmosphere (or lack thereof) at the TC? I think it's gotten better the last few months. Is it because we take teams for granted while at home? Do we get too fomfortable? Why can't we play with that "us against the world" attitude we seem to play with on the road?

Maybe it has something to do with the poor attendance at home...

I think thats exactly what it is...and even with the poor attendance, the fans who DO show up arent really loud and boisterous...Toyota Center is really like a poor man's Staples Center, sometimes its hard to tell if anyone's at the game...

Yeah and when you're at the games..sometimes you don't want to yell or cheer cuz everyone around you is just sitting there like they're supposed to be quiet.

Our home record really is weird. Our road record is good. We get lazy at home?

    The Silver Lining:
We won't have homecourt advantage in the playoffs.
We play better on the road.

Ergo...the Larry O'Brien trophy is ours!

I agree with your comment Man.

I think another reason is that it may be easier for VG to hype up the troops going into road games, or "unfriendly territory."

Some people prefer to be booed or jeered at because it keeps their backs against the wall, so you gotta keep fighting. Maybe VG, or the players, prefers that atmosphere.

i wouldnt consider the first 3 inexcusable. in both the t-wolves and first laker game t-mac did not play. and there were two crucial plays that sealed the game in the opponents favor. in the wolves game the bogus offensive foul called on JJ that gave the win to the wolves. in the lakers game down three, under 1:40 or so left, yao gets an offensive rebound goes up for a dunk and mihm comes straight across his forearm and fouls him and there is no call. and the knicks game crawford banks in a 30 footer from pretty much straight away which makes his shot pretty much luck. the bank shot from straight away is one of the toughest shots to make since you have to shoot it with a slight higher arc and harder.

the last 3 though i would consider inexcusable even without yao against the hornets. the t-mac injury is significant in the first two loses on your list because at the time the old rocket team was dependent on tracy creating for everyone else, now with sura, wesley, barry, james its a much better passing team

Well actually, we wouldn't be 3rd seed, since the top 3 seeds go to the division leaders, and we would still be behind SA. It's OK though, a lot of people are forgetting that this year.

Anyways, I see your point. Also don't forget the road loss to the Bobcats.

I don't think it is the fans. Other teams have calm fans or little fans.

I think it is focus and enegy. For whatever reason, the Rockets are more focused and have more energy being on the road. I gotta believe it starts with the two stars, because role players especially usually do better at home.

Twolves and Lakers game we were without Tmac and before the trades took place. And they both were still playing well at that time.

More of you lousy fans should spring for tickets and go to the games and yell.

    . . . he said, from 1300 miles away.

This is kind of what I was getting at. I wasn't trying to start another "Houston fans suck" thread. Lord knows we've had enough of those.

I think it has more to do with our mindset. We don't seem to play with any sense of urgency at home. Seems like every time we make a big shot, we follow it up with a defensive lapse on the very next possession. Tonight, for example, there was a sequence where Yao made a tough shot inside that brought us to within 1 (I believe) but he was slow getting down court and we gave up an easy bucket on the other end. We just can't keep the momentum.

On the other hand, we seem to really go for the jugular when we're on the road. We put teams away in the 2nd half instead of letting them back in like we do at home. We seem to thrive when it's "us against the world."

Oh well, good thing we don't have home court advantage this year. It might end up being a very good thing. I seem to remember another Rocket team a few years ago that did pretty well in the playoffs without once having home court advantage. ;)

    I was there tonight

and there was plenty of noise in the lower section

...until the last 2 minutes of the 3rd quarter, when the Suns went on that run

    - then it was game over

...I think most people were amazed that we could hold the suns scoreless and still not take the lead

We didnt play well enough to win. It's not like we have losing record at home.

We are 44-30 right now, any other year, this is a lock to the playoff, but this year it's rough in the west, everything is magnified. We are an OK home team. Not as good as Spurs of course.

Haha that was funny. I have to agree though, I feel SOOO MUCH more confident when rockets are on the road.

They just have that killer instinct on the road. Actually, I get really worried whenever there's a HOME game.
