The game everyone wanted to see at the end of the season: #2 UNC vs. #1 Illinois Two number one seeds in the tourny playing for the title. Predictions?
UNC should control the interior and has quality depth.McCants is a wild card. North Carolina wins big...say 91 - 71
UNC would be smart to pressure outside the 3 point line with their NBA athleticism. I think their defensive rotation is key since they can be too confident that their offense will bail them out. Marvin Williams and Sean May should have big games against Augustine. I expect them to win simply because of their size, but I wouldn't be surprised if Illinois pulled it out. 75-70 UNC
UNC has better Athletes. Illinois plays beter as a team. Should be a great game. Illini - 72 UNC - 69
UNC's overall talent level is so much higher than Illinois'. Their frontline (Sean May in particular) should totally dominate Illinois' undersized "big" men. However, Illinois has beaten many teams that are more talented than they are. They play together better as a team than anyone else in the country and this team simply refuses to lose. I think that it's either going to be a blowout by UNC or a close game won by Illinois. This should be a heck of a game.
Just out of curiosity, whose UNC recruits are these that are tearing it up? I'd find it ironic if these are all Doherty's recruits that making this run after Doherty got run out of town.
May, Felton, McCants, and Jawad Williams are all Doherty's recruits. Marvin Williams is the only Roy Williams recruit that's playing a significant role for this team now. So yes, basically Matt Doherty's recruits are making this run after he got fired.
I just am glad that he is with Oklahoma State instead of UNC. I don't really like either of these 2 teams and I probably dislike Illinois more (although that is not always the case). But seeing the way they came back to beat a very strong Arizona team has convinced me that they are a team of destiny and it doesn't matter who they play, they are going to win.
Considering they almost all left after their freshman year because of him, I don't think we (UNC) care too much that he's gone.
