They did an announcement that the Pope had died over the closed-circuit TV we have here. I was subbing a class, and we were reading about it on the net. It's not really as traumatic or saddening to people as the Kennedy assasination IMO because it's expected that he will die any time now, so when it actually happens, we/Catholics will be more prepared for it. Also, the Pope has had so many health problems lately, that I think it will really be sort of a blessing when he does finally pass away. But certainly, it is a big deal for everyone -- John Paul II has been such a public figure and an ardent supporter of human rights and the Catholic teaching in world events that his absence will be notable. Furthermore, any Pope after him will find it nearly impossible to live up to his predecessor's example.

I agree with Vengeance. An 84 year old dying isn't shocking. It's expected.

What happens if something like that did happen? What happens if he enters a vegetative state but remains alive only due to machines? I remember very recently he said he wanted to be kept alive on machines if a Schiavo type issue happened. Would power pass on to a new Pope?

No disrespect meant, and since his organs appear to be failing, this would be highly unlikely, but I am curious.

I think the Pope's position is that you can't deny food and water to someone that is alive, even if it requires use of a tube. I don't think he is in favor of using truly artificial means to keep someone alive.

Anyways, his heart and kidneys are failing...no machine will be able to keep him alive much longer.

I've realized that today isn't really a sad day because I feel he's finally getting some well deserved rest. Anyways, somebody posted this on another forum and it made me smile, and then somebody responded to this pic with a post I think others will find funny too:
