Barring any unforseen screw-ups, I'll be getting my new PS2 this week. For those of you that either own one or have played any games on one, any suggestions for games? Especially fighting games... ------------------ "Christ, it's not as if Steve pissed on a guy!!!!!" -- cson makes a return to my quotable sig as he comments on how Steve Francis should not be T'd up for slapping the backboard on a dunk...speak loudly cson, you rock!
I do not know about any fighting games, but Madden 2001 is great. Defense is a little hard, but the graphics are very outstanding. I really enjoyed playing that game, but only get it if you like those type of games. ------------------
Madden 2001 and its graphics is one of the reasons I decided to break down and buy my first console since my Atari 2600... haha. I've played Madden 2001 on the PC and saw the PS2 version and in terms of graphics alone, the PS2 version wins. Far more realistic to me. That being said, I think it comes with the PS2 package I'm getting. I may look into getting NBA Live, but not sure... hrrmm... ------------------ "Christ, it's not as if Steve pissed on a guy!!!!!" -- cson makes a return to my quotable sig as he comments on how Steve Francis should not be T'd up for slapping the backboard on a dunk...speak loudly cson, you rock!
Yea, same here. The game is so amazing. No other game compares to it, and I would think it should be sports game of the year. The graphics and realness are just so great it is like you are there. ------------------
Madden NFL 2001, NBA Live 2001, and when it comes out, Metal Gear Solid 2. Also you can check out Gran Turismo 3 if your into racing games. ------------------ Francis out top, 9 seconds on the clock, he gives a no look pass to Cuttino Mobley, 4 seconds left, Mobley passes to an open Langhi in the corner with 1 second left! Langhi at the buzzer.......YES!!! How Sweet It Is!!
Dr, I agree with the others Madden 2001 on PS 2 is sensational, defense is real tough, but the real like graphics are worth and with some practice you can actually win some games, the other games i have played (hired a ps2 and some games over Xmas) were Teken tag challenge and some car game, i don't really do for fighting and car games that much, mostly cause i am crap at them, but i didn't notice that much of a difference in graphics for them, but that was probably just me. Also tried FIFA 2001, which was very good. Smeg ------------------ "What is it with this girl, has she got beer flavoured nipples??" - Heath Ledger in 10 things I hate about you
Whatever you do, I recommend you stay away from Gameday 2001. To be frank, that game is a piece of crap. It's not even worth a rental. ------------------
Have any of you PS2 owners used it as a DVD player? How does it compare to a regular "bottom of the line" (~$200.00) DVD player? ------------------
I hired one over Xmas and had it connected to the stereo for the sound and it seemed like we have to turn it up real high. ------------------ "What is it with this girl, has she got beer flavoured nipples??" - Heath Ledger in 10 things I hate about you
I don't know how it compares to a regular DVD player (this is my first one). The movies look fine to me, but then again, I guess I wouldn't know if there was really a problem, huh? Madden 2001, to me, is probably the best football, damn that, best sports game, ever. Defense is hard, but you have to play tricky D. I found one play that the CPU hasn't been able to figure out yet. Pick the Nickel package, and double both of the wideouts. Then audible your defensive coverage to put the DB's in a bump and run coverage. This helps to protect against the run too. Pick the worst D-lineman that you have and control him. Let the other three D-lineman rush the passer (suprisingly, you seem to get more QB sacks this way). Use the other D-lineman to double the TE, or the extra slot receiver...because that's the only person the QB will be able to throw to. I just hope Live 2001 has the franschise option like Madden. That would make the game so much better. ------------------
Madden Tips: True, the nickel package over strong and over weak. Pick the defensive backs to play the short side of the field (hashmarks). Not the long side of it. Drop a lineman and cover the long side of the field. And suprisingly you do fairly well and get sacks without blitz. To increase your sack total use the speed burst to blow by the lineman. Other defense that is fairly effective is the dime, prevent. It covers the long pass and leaves you to cover the short (mostly Tight end) with a lineman. Someone like Sam Madison as FS will get like 16 picks or more without you doing a thing. On offense, no play works every time, but I like the quick run by the HB to the left (use the X button).... and the play were you have two wides outs to the left and a TE and WR on the right. Shotgun. The inside wideout breaks toward the sideline and the outside WR goes downfield five, and the cuts across the middle. WR usually gets open unless playing the Ravens. Great against a blitz. On the goal line, run hook to the TE. Almost automatic against goal line D. For a long pass. Send TE and inside WR deep. Send outside WR's on out patters. Usually hits a big gainer to a good tight end if you underthrow the ball. ------------------ humble, but hungry. [This message has been edited by PhiSlammaJamma (edited January 08, 2001).]
More tips: It seems like the HB sweep out of the pro-form set is almost autmoatic near the goal line, since the CPU always stacks the line. It works best with a fast back. Another autmoatic play is the slants on the pro-form set. Substitute the TE with a fast wide receiver, and send all three receivers on fly patterns (you have to audible and adjust their routes). It works about 75% of the time if your QB has decent accuracy. ------------------
I'm going to try those plays icehouse. The other thing I learned real quick, as would anybody, is that you sign lots of low salary players to long term contracts in that 1st season. And then you re-sign your major stars to long term deals. Right now I'm trying to win with an all rookie team. Culpepper at QB is horrible so far. ------------------ humble, but hungry.
