I love mafia films. The Godfathers, GoodFellas, Things Change, Untouchables, Mean Streets, Casino, Bugsy, Carlito's Way, Donnie Brasco, Scarface (I'm probly forgetting a few more I've seen...) Watching the Sopranos DVDs, and remembering Thing To Do In Denver has got me hungry for more mobster movies. I must be missing some. I started scanning imdb and I found a few I haven't seen: Once Upon a Time in America State of Grace The Brotherhood The Outfit Are these good? What other good mafia films have I missed?
Does "Gloria" (1980) count as a Mafia movie? Mango ------------------ Lets get the Mo Go working! Test Your NBA Trade Ideas 1. Put new topics in the proper forum. I've never seen any of the ones you listed(ones you haven't see) Things to do in Denver is one of my favorite movies,I first saw it on video...Was it big in theatres? If you haven't seen it,it is definitly worth watching. ------------------ Now chew through my ball sack
Suicide Kings is one of those films my friends keep telling me about, and I keep forgetting about. Thanks for another reminder, outlaw. Gloria sounds like it counts to me, judging from the Maltin summary on imdb. Is it good? Thanks for giving me the year for Gloria; I see 6 movies titled Gloria on imdb, wow. Mickey Blue Eyes and Analyze This are pretty much comedies, right? My favorite mafia comedy has always been My Blue Heaven. Things to Do in Denver was only in limited release, I think? Maybe a really brief theater run, then quickly to video? I really like it, but it doesn't seem to get much respect from critics.
BTW, anyone who liked The Godfathers and Goodfellas, has GOT to start watching the Sopranos. Its worth the extra $5 for HBO all by itself. The DVD (maybe tapes too?) of the first season is out. Right now HBO is showing re-runs from end of the first season and about to start re-running the second season. If you run right out and watch the first season on DVD, you can start watching the second season on HBO and not miss an episode. I love the opening (and recurring) scenes of Tony Soprano (the boss) on his psychiatrist's couch, the duality of Tony's mob family and his wife and kids family, the great mobster business ... I LOVE it. If you like mobster stuff, you owe it to yourself to check it out.
Gloria has a story line about a family that is marked for execution by the mob. The boy is the only one who is not killed and ends up in the custody of a woman (Rowlands) who has mob ties. Her connection/bonding with the boy is stronger than her fear of the mob trying to get the boy. Depends if you like the human element type movie versus a high body count. I enjoyed it, but then again I am Mango. Mango ------------------ Lets get the Mo Go working! Test Your NBA Trade Ideas 1. Put new topics in the proper forum. What about New JAck City Sugar Hill THE KING OF NEW YORK [FRICKIN GREAT MOVIE] Rocket RIver ------------------
Thanks for the disclaimer. Things Change is good, low body count, human element mafia film. Written/Directed by David Mamet, one of my very favorites (GlengarryGlenRoss, Spanish Prisoner) and starring Don Ameche and Joe Mantegna. Leonard Maltin's summary: Simple Italian shoemaker (Ameche) agrees to take the rap for a Chicago mob murder for a fee, but the man assigned to baby-sit him for a weekend (Mantegna) decides to take the old man on a final fling before he goes to jail. Slight, sometimes flat comic fable by Mamet and Shel Silverstein is buoyed by some wonderful vignettes and endearing performances by the stars. Ameche is a joy to watch. **½ [This message has been edited by jamcracker (edited January 05, 2001).]
New Jack City and Sugar Hill were good, but they were more about drug lords than mafia men. ------------------
I can't believe that everyone is forgetting about Jane Austen's Mafia, the all time classic starring Jay Mohr...(Run florist, run!!!) Come on, any movie with Christina Applegate is worth watching...mmmmm... ------------------ If you don't eat your meat, you can't have any pudding!!
I did see Once Upon a Time in America, which follows a mafioso from childhood. Mostly a meditation on why immigrants entered organized crime. Cerebral, slow, but I liked it ok. ------------------ RealGM Rockets Draft Obligations Summary http://www.gaffordstudios.cjb.net/
ooh-ooh-ooh what about the Matthew Broderick, Marlon Brando, Bruno Kirby movie 'The Freshman' that was a kinda funny mob movie rH ------------------ The Psychedelic Groove House of Rockets Basketball Love! I think this particular film is the exception to the Christina Applegate rule. Jane Austen's Mafia! was quite possibly the worst movie I've ever seen... certianly the worst movie I've ever seen in the theater. (Boxing Helena is on my "Worst of All-Time List, too, but I only saw that on tape). ------------------ Houston Sports Board
New Jack City was a great movie. and yes it was about organized crime. but definately not "La cosa nostra" like Italian Mob. for that matter basicly none of the movies listed here are REAL mob movies. man you guys really are form Texas So Jamcracker here are some REAL mafia movies you migh like: "A bronx tale" "once upon a time in america" (american release is missing 88 minutes) "American Me" is about the mexican mob, but is a real mob movie "La scorta" "Bonanno: A Godfather's Story" "gotti", and maybe "the last don"(but they were made for tv). Im not saying you will like any of these films well some of them were really well done. but here is a good guide to follow. IF ITS NOT RATED "R" DONT WATCH IT. but here is a site which has some movies ranked. and it reminded me of "Bonanno: A Godfather's Story" so its not all bad for a site http://www.geocities.com/CapitolHill/Lobby/9880/ ------------------ Hanta-Force Paintball http://www.hanta-force.com
'Casino' was too ugly!! I like 'Untouchables' and the 'Godfather' series. ------------------ "Here's the kicker... it doesn't matter if you believe this or not because I'm sure you don't, but it already has created enough doubt and makes enough sense to make me and I'm sure anyone else wonder why in the world you would make such a narrow, closed-minded assumption that my Jesus Christ has suddenly become your cat." ***Clutch slays the religion basher known as DREAMer
