You guys ready for this one? This game comes out this week, and it looks really nice. IGN gave it a 9.6, and many other sites have given it a score of 10! http://www.splintercell.com/us/splintercellchaostheory/index.php
and overall it's got a score of 96 from 13 critics including IGN and Team Xbox http://www.metacritic.com/games/platforms/xbx/tomclancyssplintercellchaostheory
Ouch! Gamespot gave the Xbox version a 8.6 and the PS2 version a 7.1. http://www.gamespot.com/xbox/action/splintercell3/review.html http://www.gamespot.com/ps2/action/splintercell3/review.html
is there that much of a difference between the 2 versions? I seriously doubt that I haven't played the game yet but damn... Gamespot is the only place that gave it this low of a rating?
I wouldn't doubt it. I haven't read the review yet, but the Xbox/PC version probably takes advantage of a bunch of features that the PS2 doesn't have, although it sounded like the developers were working hard to push the PS2 version as much as possible. IIRC, they did come up with some nice effects. Of course, part of the problem is trying to make a game on just about every platform while trying to push each system to its limiits; it would have been interesting to see what they could have done with a little extra time in tweaking the PS2 version, or vice versa. IIRC, I think Brothers in Arms had a pretty big difference in scores between the Xbox/PS2 versions as well. I tend to like GS's reviews a little bit since they don't dish out great scores for every game like some other reviewers do. If a game gets a 9+ there, it really is great.
PS2 versions generally can't handle the lighting effects that the xbox versions have- and that is a huge, if not the hugest, part of gameplay.
I don[t know about that. I have played some great games they scored in the 7's, and they gave Tony Hawk 3 a 10. A freaking 10? that game was average at best. Hell I bought Panzer Dragoon Orta off their review and played all of 1-2 levels, then forgot about it.
Well, it was more of a "in general" statement. I don't agree with each and every review they give (after playing MGS3, I don't see how they could give it a 8.7), but they seem to be harder on games than most places, which I tend to like due to the over-scoring of some games (looks at some perfect/near perfect scores of GTA:SA and Halo 2). As for the THPS3 review, that did seem a bit too high, although scores all-around for the game were pretty high (perfect or in the 9's), so GS wasn't the only one who thought it was better than average. I'm starting to shy away from this games that come out every year (THPS/THUG and other sports games), but I certainly wouldn't put that game on the same level as say a LoZ:OOT or a RE4. I'm not sure about the PDO comment. That always looked like a pretty cool game to me, and it got some pretty good reviews overall (90+%), so it must have been pretty decent as well. Nowadays, I tend to go off of a number of reviews as well as personal impressions when it comes to a game. So yeah, I should have added an asterisk or something in the other post.
I agree with RC, Gamespot is one of the few review sites I respect. REALLY looking forward to Chaos Theory. The multiplayer in Pandora Tomorrow on Live was outstanding and it looks like they've made it even better this time around. Those of you who are SC fans and have Live, we need to get together on this sometime.
