    Hey all,

Well, for about the third time now, I've seen a debate in the "Rockets Game Action" forum about DaDakota's signature (see thread topic). Since this is a more appropriate forum for that discussion I decided to start a new thread here.

First off, I'd like to point out an obvious flaw in the question. The actual theory is that monkeys, apes, and humans all evolved from a common ancestor, not that humans evolved directly from present day monkeys and apes.

Evolution doesn't always happen in a straight line like his signature would imply. There is a concept called divergent evolution. This means that one ancestral stock of animals may undergo different natural selection processes in different environments such that over time they may evolve into multiple species. Here's an image that may help you visualize what I'm talking about.

How a species adapts to its environment is a major driving force on how each subset of that species evolves. For example, the traits that allow an animal to survive to adulthood and subsequently reproduce in, for example, a desert environment (e.g. ability to retain water, resistance to sunlight, etc.) are quite different from what may be advantageous in a lush tropical environment (e.g. resistance to excessive rainfall, camouflage in tropical plants, etc.).

If you can find some of the literature on the flora and fauna of the Galapagos Islands, you'll find numerous examples of divergent and parallel evolution (a common ancestor evolves into similar, but unique species) even on islands that are only seperated by a few hundred yards.

As for whether or not humans, monkeys, and apes share a common ancestor . . . well, I'll say this much: the evidence provided by the fossil records is interesting enough, but what really intrigues me is the fact that the genetic code of humans and chimpanzees is about 99% identical.

Launch Pad, don't you know anything about Hangout topics. You are supposed to allow for opposition, but cleverly not give away all your points until the opposition commits with a full fusillade.

Then you can ban them! [IMG]

I love these smiley faces. It means you can't take me seriously!!! I am impervious! Fire away with impunity.

Hey...is that too much text for a signature?

I can't believe my signature sparked a debate, it is merely there to get people to think, which some people around here are constantly failing to do.

    Hmmm, interesting.

I thought the standard method favored by most posters was to lay all of your cards on the table in your first post. Then, if anyone else responded with a well thought out and cogent counterargument, the you could lambast and belittle them by using their quotes out of context and stating your own opinions as facts [IMG]
I love the smileys too, but don't worry heyp, most posters don't take you seriously with or without the smilies [IMG]

Come on, DaDakota, we're mostly Americans; we don't like to have to think [IMG]

What is amusing is Darwin believe in Creation and said it on his death bed. He only created the theory of evolution.

If members evolved from junior members, then why are there still junior members?

Actually, this appears to be an urban legend. There are numerous sources that dispute the "deathbed" myth. I found this quote on religioustolerance.org:

"Charles Darwin's deathbed conversion: A woman by the name of Lady Hope allegedly visited Darwin shortly before he died and heard his deathbed conversion to Christianity. This event might have happened, but it is extremely doubtful.

"Lady Hope did visit Darwin, but it was originally believed to be in the fall of 1881, about 6 months before Darwin died. Many historians believe that he had lost his
faith completely some 30 years before his death, when his beloved daughter Annie died.

One researcher, Richard Rorty, tracked down over 100 occurrences of the legend, and successfully showed that Lady Hope (Elizabeth Cotton) did exist, and probably did visit Darwin near the end of his life. But he discounts the possibility that Darwin abandoned his Agnostic beliefs.

His family energetically denied his conversion. His daughter Henrietta commented in 1922:'I was present at his deathbed. Lady Hope was not present during his last illness, or any illness. I believe he never even saw
her, but in any case she had no influence over him in any department of thought or belief. He never recanted any of his scientific views, either then or earlier. We think the story of his conversion was fabricated in the U.S.A. The whole story has no foundation whatever.'"

Just a quick point. Darwin can be credited with the theory of Natural Selection, which is a model for how evolutionary processes work.

I don't believe that he came up with the theory that men are evolved from a common ancestor shared by monkeys. I believe that theory can be accredited to Lamarck back in the early 1800's before Darwin was even born.

Bottom line: Darwin did not create the theory of evolution.

As to whatever Darwin may or may not have believed at the time of his death, I wouldn't put much stock in it. He was suffering from fatigue and intestinal sickness for the last several years of his life, so he probably wasn't in his right mind anyway [IMG]
