Hey gang, my new job requires a lot of traveling for business, I am at the Dallas airport and on my way to London for the 3rd time in 6 weeks, and I am despising it.

Sure you get the perks, the upgrades, the admirals club etc...etc...but I would rather be at my house with my kids.

    Traveling SUCKS !!

Generally hate it, only in small doses to decent places is it all right, and even then too much is too much.

Other than missing my kids, I dont mind it. I can see how going to London (or anywhere overseas) as often as every other week can get annoying. I travel once every 4-6 weeks and I dont mind it.

I hate it, but the only place I usually travel is to Oklahoma.

I have to add myself to the hate it list.

Even when you do go somewhere exciting you hardly have anytime to enjoy being there -- and then in my case I'm either alone or with a co-worker I'd rather not spend time with.

For the most part, I hate it. Though I have had to go to Montreal a couple of times a year for the last several years and that was pretty good. Montreal is a cool city and I really like the hotel where I stay- the Chateau Versailles.

    I absolutely, 100%, without a doubt hate it b/c:

    1. Takes me out of my daily routine (I'm a stickler for routines)
    2. Can't always find hotels with a gym to exercise
    3. Hate to fly (hate airplanes)
    4. Hate airport security (I have gotten in several scuffles with airport security in the past year, some of which have resulted in me getting "back-roomed" for my behavior)

I love it and wish I did more although I would probably miss my kids if I traveled more.

I only get to travel twice a year.

I don't mind it. Time on the plane is particularly productive for me, since nobody's calling you on the phone and the distraction of the internet is not present. I enjoy reading or getting work done during that time.

Sam - I need a rec for NYC- The Gansevoort or the Alex?

I fly 20 to 30 weeks per year. It gets old at times, but it pays good. My wife travels in her work also. Our kids are grown. We meet at home on the weekends.

Hate it... fortunately I don't have to do it often. Bottom line: you're spending all your time, including what would have been your "free" time (say, at night), doing something you don't want to be doing. Often it conflicts with something I wanted to do at home, and could have normally done (say, evening stuff). I had to stay out of my orchestra for an entire concert cycle because a business trip conflicted with the concert.

In my case, it usually means chemistry conferences. Aside from the expected "boring" factor, sorry to say this, but science people aren't always very nice. They're busy trying to impress each other and act a certain way. I wish people would quit being pretentious and just be normal. You can't even truly enjoy things like lunch or socials because it seems like everyone is trying to play some sort of game. Maybe I just picked the wrong field. :) What I usually do with these meetings is find some reason to come late and leave early. Sometimes, as long as they see you there, they don't know how long you are or aren't there. :D

I would not stay in the meatpacking district though it might suit you. Stick with the Grand, Tribeca or Soho. Although if you want the old school NYC experience, stay at the plaza, sherry netherlands, or waldorf.

How does a spry young collegian do work on the plane? Are you planning dorm related matters?

hee hee, a few weekends ago I was at 4 seasons in Scottsdale. This would make a nice honeymoon spot. Room had telescope, high ceiling with second floor studio, board room, 2 push button fireplaces, living room, kitchen, outdoor shower, walk in shower, brittney bath tub, private Chickuzi outdoors, patio deck, mountain view (200 yards away), foyer, and walk in closet. Arcacia is a 4 star restauraunt and the ground had private pools, walkabouts, and was pretty much isolated from all humanity. When I left I needed a ride and they sent a hummer limo that could hold up to 30 people. Trump may not have been happy with it, but I had good time. Room rate was approximately $600 a night. The only thing about it that I didn't like was that everything else was about 40 minutes away. You have to ride in a limo for a good 40 minutes with nothing to do. I never much liked that but who can complain. Arizona is spaced out. The Hummer could be rented for 3 hours at $120. I believe the company was Transtyle. That is not too bad if you happen to be needing one. If that wasn't enough, I had a bunny rabbit in my backyard. About 70 degrees. It was all good. :)

traveling for work sucks because well you have to work. Arghhhh

I've been all around the globe and I didn't get much time to do anything cool because you don't get out of work until late and you have to be cabable of work the next morning. That means no heavy drinking or partying and very little sight seeing. It would have been ok if I was single and in my early 20's, but my body just can't handle it now. Plus you end up missing the wife and kids so you spend tons of money calling them which gets in the way of your play time.

I've figured that travelling jobs are for young single people who have no commitments and limitless energy or middle age people who want to get away from their spouse and kids.

I hate traveling for work. I generally do not travel for work unless it involves meeting angry customers (anger is not my fault) who want me to wave a magic wand to make their problems go away. I think if I ever got a magic wand and learned to less hate flying, traveling for work might suck less.
