What DVD burners do you own? And what burners would you recomend under $100?

I am looking at the BenQ 1620 (New Egg $52).

I am still trying to figure out the difference between the LiteOn 1673 adn 1633.

Anyways, I don't know much about DVD burners. So far all I know is which software to use. Based on 16x models, I am trying to decide between the LiteOn and Benq, particularily because of the price.

    Top 10 models by PCWorld.com:

Prices are getting damn low, but I want to get something good.

I kind of want to get an internal dvd burner, but I have a Dell Inspiron 8200 laptop. Does it matter what type I get since I'm putting it in a laptop and not a desktop?

best/cheapest solution IMO: buy an internal drive and buy a external casing. turn the internal drive into a usb drive.

    dvd burner: $52
    external casing: $30

about $82 instead of paying twice as much for one that's already built

I searched around some more last night, and read some other BBS's like cdfreaks where anothe guy had a poll about which burner to get etc.

Read a few more reviews and it seems the BenQ is good bang for the buck.

I was having a hard time choosing between the BenQ and the LiteOn, but eventually chose the BenQ DW1620.

That baby should be here in a few days. I love NewEgg.

Where do you get this external casing from? Do they sell it at NewEgg? Got a link to one?

NEC makes the best internal burner for the money, followed by Lite-On*

*but NOT the SOHW (Sony Hardware) models.

My big bro was telling me about the DVD recorders in which you can now print on the DVDs with the same laser that is used to burn them. I have to research a little more on this, but I'd say it's a good investment if you don't want to deal with the labeling, printing, etc.

He told me he might buy one, so I will check it out and if this thread is till popular around the time, I can report back how it does this (if anyone is interested).

    HP makes it (http://h30015.www3.hp.com/hp_dec/lightscribe/index_FL.asp).

    I said for the money.

You can get a NEC for $60. The quality of a Plextor isn't so much greater that it's worth the extra expense to the typical consumer.

^I love that Brian Fellows skit...

I just got the that NEC one from NewEgg last week and its been solid so far, I had a Plextor and it was good too I just wanted to get a higher speed and Dual Layer as well... Also some of you say that brand X is better than brand Y, are you just talking about what you read because other than breaking how are you compairing the brands?? I've worked with all kinds of drive brand and I can you I will never buy any LITEON drive only because they start to fail very early, I've had 4 liteon drives die on me in total (CD, DVD, and CDRWs)

NEC, I have the first NEC dvd burner, 1100A series and it still works flawlessly. I think this dvd burner is about 3+ years old.
