GMail is basically a free email service that gives you 1GB of email space so you can basically save everything you need. They have come out with some nice features like uploading up to 10mb of pictures at a time and storing them and stuff like that...

apparently you can only get the service if you are invited (thus this thread) and that's why. i am not exactly sure what else is good about it except the 1 GB thing (which is huge). i wanna say it's good with spam or something but i don't know.

and if i reply to get an invite, do i have to do anything or give some info or just send a regular email saying i want an invite?

The catch is that they sift through your mail and they sell that information to ad companies to better sell you their products. If you have email containing words about cars, the ad bar you'll see could be from a car company.

If you're not concerned about privacy, Gmail isn't that bad a service.

Is this just something that everyone claims is true or did Google come out and publicly state that they would read any and all email on g-mail?

I think so many of these GMail invite threads have been started that just about everybody who has wanted one has received one.

Most people don't need it. It became a fad for a while to give away the email addresses. Google owns it and would give away free emails so they could have the users basically test the servers during beta. It helps them work through bottlenecks and loads as the number of users steadily increases. Google does scan your email and "suggests" ads to you based upon what it finds. There is another site whose URL I forget at the moment that has 2GB of storage. Why on earth anybody needs an email account with that much storage, I'll never know... :)

I believe Gmail is going public on April 1, so it won't be long until invites aren't needed anymore.

I like having a Gmail account because you can use it Outlook, Thunderbird, or whatever, and yet still keep a copy of your email online also. I like having my email stored on my computer and a backup online.

When you are reading your email (specifically, when you click on one of your email messages,) their engine scans the mail for keywords and presents advertisements based on those words.

For example, a friend of mine sent me a post from a forum called coffeegeeks.com which described various coffee makers and grinders. At the far right of the page where the email is displayed are some small blurbs about coffee makers and other coffee stuff. I have found it very unobtrusive.

Was that sarcasm? I think it was, but I can come up with a dozen reasons that I personally need that much storage.

Best part about gmail? Free pop service so you can use it with Outlook or any pop client at home. Just download the emails directly to your client :)
