Astacio was perfect for 3 innings versus the Cardinals. He faced Pujols, Edmonds, Rolen, Sanders, so he didn't face know scrubs. He also struck out 2. He also proved he is not scared to pitch inside when he backed Edmonds off the plate and the next pitch he got a weak groundball to Burke. He also showed great command which Redding, Munro, Hernandez, and Duckworth all have problems with. He is not that young, he is 25 even though never passed AA. He has to be leader of the 5th spot after this performance.

Especially since Munro and Redding have struggled so much, and Astacio is doing this against a great lineup... he very well could be the front-runner.

Carlos will go back down to AAA, and they'll probably keep Munro for long releif... meaning they either have to find a trade for Redding, or try and convince him to become an OF (like the Cards did with Ankiel...;) )

I thought Carlos was out of options like Munro and Duckworth. If so doesn't that mean they can't send him down?

I don't believe he is out of options--he went one full season without appearing at the ML level, so that year does not count as an option year.

Ankiel can hit. Redding can't do either.

About time one of the possible 5th starters did something.

I doubt it would matter. Can't imagine teams are desperate to pick up a guy who hasn't been effective in years and can't break 90 anymore. He's still young, but his ability to succeed on the major league level is in serious doubt.

As for Astacio, I'd like to see more before I award him a rotation spot. Glad to see him succeed though, he could be a solid starter with time.

I know... I was kidding (hence the wink)

Hell... I might even take a wild Ankiel over a ineffective Redding.
