Before his surgery, he was a stud. It takes 2 years to get back to old form, and its been 2 years. His velocity still is low and his command is horrible. Today he has giving up 4 runs, 2 GIGANTIC home runs, 3 walks, 4 hits, and a HBP in 3 innings with no strikeouts I think. No astros seems to want the 5th spot.

If Carlos hasn't regained even a hint of his old velocity yet, I think the odds are against him. He just won't be an effective starter in the league. Too bad, he was a stud back when he first came up. I thought he was destined for greatness.

he's not a power pitcher like before, where he tried to strike everyone out, he's more of a finese pitcher now, trying to hit spots, nick and pick....it'll take time for him to get use to that....i have to say, give him another yr....

I think he would have never had the should injury if we didn't bring him up so early....from Double A that yr....

He is very young, had major league skills, still has options, and will likely be sent down to AAA this year. If his options run out before his skills come back, he will be sent packing.

bringing him up early had nothing to do with his injury -- he injured it sliding head first into 2nd base. It was a fluke injury that had nothing to do with his lack of experience on the mound.

Its not looking good for Carlos.

Even though he had great stuff before his injury, what impressed the Astros the most about him was his confidence. He had a killer instinct throughout the minors, and when they called him up at the last second for a Saturday August game against Pittsburgh in 2001... he calmly went out there and threw 7 shut-out innings.

Now that he doesn't have his "stuff" his confidence is slowly starting to wane, since he can no longer challenge guys in the heart of the zone.

He may have to turn into a lefty-specialist, or the ultimate finesse pitcher (developing a good changeup, and 2-seam fastball) if his arm strength never comes back again.

Remember... he doesn't need too much of a fastball (see Zito)... but he does need to be able to throw it around 86-88 mph with control.

Right now, when he lets it fly with all the strength he's got... he has no clue where its going.

His trade value just keep taking a nose dive every time he takes the mound for us.

Do some TP......and fast...........and stop exposing him.
