Man, you can never -- NEVER -- get enough John Coltrane. Blue Train. Summertime. My Favorite Things. Damn, the guys amazing. Anyways, just wondering if anyone else digs Coltrane like I do. ------------------ It doesn't matter if I have a signature!
Coltrane is the man! But put him with Miles Davis and you are in horn heaven! One of the best gifts I've ever got was a 6 CD box set released in Oct this year, "The Complete Columbia Recordings (1955-1961)". Simply Amazing! ------------------ 'Deeds, not words, shall speak me.' [This message has been edited by mc mark (edited December 07, 2000).]
I'm a very, very casual listener of Coltrane, but even to my untrained hears, he's a genius. ------------------ "He was under more balls than a midget hooker."-Bobby Hill visit www.swirve.com and, http://www.geocities.com/clutch34_2000 for great Rocket insight by some of your fellow BBS posters!
I, too, am a novice listener of John Coltrane, but I think "A Love Supreme" is wonderful. I can listen to that disc over and over again. ------------------ - Beck Dream...bring back the goggles
Listen to some of his experimental live recordings (village vanguard, birdland, etc). Harder to appreciate for some, but then you can see the depth of his genius. ------------------ EZLN
I love his stuff - especially Blue Trane and My Favorite Things. Simply astounding. I'm slightly more a fan of Charlie Parker than Trane, but they were both amazing. ------------------ Mmmmmmm. Sacrelicious.
I play the sax. I love Parker and Coltrane. Kenny G sucks. ------------------ Hey, I've got a new signature! 302
Plan on it not leaving your player for the next three months! ------------------ 'Deeds, not words, shall speak me.'
Right now Coltrane's my tag-team partner in the Tournament of Death known as Final Exams. Needless to say, I'm getting my ass whooped -- but at least the music's good. Anywho, sometimes I think I'm wrapped up more in the mythology surround the man then the music itself -- Coltrane just had such a commanding mystique about him. I highly suggest indulging yourselves in a Coltrane bio -- I'll pop back on later to list my favorites. Understanding the man enhances the music into infinite dimensions. ------------------ It doesn't matter if I have a signature!
But that'd involve my Buddy Rich recording coming out of it. Also, Lynus, did you read the comments that Pat Metheny made about Kenny G? Oh man, I have never laughed so hard in my life. ------------------ Nuggets4 The Pinnacle - Rising to the Top With the Denver Nuggets http://www.NugsPinnacle.com [This message has been edited by Nuggets4 (edited December 07, 2000).]
I have a rare T. Monk and Coltrane CD on the Jazzland label. It was recorded live at the Five Spot Cafe in New York City. Good Stuff. ------------------ When we tire of well-worn ways, we seek for new. This restless craving in the souls of men spurs them to climb, and to seek the mountain view. -- Ella Wheeler Wilcox
Coltrane, a legend among mere mortals. There's not much you can really say about him. Personally, one of my favorite tracks of all time of his is "Summertime". Wow. MC Mark, I think I'm getting that 6 CD set for Xmas. I REALLY hope so at least. ------------------ Nuggets4 The Pinnacle - Rising to the Top With the Denver Nuggets http://www.NugsPinnacle.com [This message has been edited by Nuggets4 (edited December 07, 2000).]
