Look at DLPs or LCDs. Plasma tvs are prone to burn in and wont give you as good as a picture as the above 2 technologies.

 

Blah. I need to hang this puppy on the wall. I've decided I don't want a honkin' monster on the floor.

Also, the current generation of plasmas aren't like the earlier generations... burn-in and fadeout aren't as prevalent. Not to mention I'm leaning towards EDTV for now and plasma EDTV's are a better deal than their LCD counterparts.

As for picture, that's subjective. I think plasmas still give a slightly better picture than DLP's and LCD's, but the gap isn't as great as it was a couple of years ago.

 

From most of what i have read now DLP and LCD are taking over. And that plasma has gone about as far as it can go unless they discover something in the near future.

Ive been keeping track of this stuff for about a year now and watching the prices. Im thinking of buying next year during January after the holidays.

 

EDTV isnt even HD quality. There is no way it is of similiar quality to the LCD or DLP

You are correct, but why should I care? Marketing doesn't make my decisions for me. If plasma gives me what I want at the price I want, who cares if it's dying? I don't have a flat screen tv... omg, I've had a curved screen CRT tv for 7 years... aaaaah... I'm gonna die. Whatever.

That's like me saying why are people buying DLP's and LCD's when LCoS could be better?

 

Regarding speakers...

Despite what some other posters have posted, speakers do make a difference. I'm not saying more expensive is better but different speakers sound, well, different. Not to mention some speakers handle lound sounds and bass much better and with more punch than others. Lound sounds and "punch" are really important with HT. It would suck not to be able to watch the Matrix or Star Wars lound.

So, pick a budget for speakers and then spend plenty of time auditioning them. The last thing you want is a great TV with speakers you aren't happy with.

Also, do NOT let the looks of the speaker influence your decision (too much). If you are going for a good DTS system (even Dolby Digital) you really want full range speakers in the back (and not those little cubes that are easy to hang and make the wife happy). A really nice HT system will have five speakers (FL, C, FR, RR, RL) all the same make and model so that there is no difference in tone between them.

So, in summery, you don't have to spend a lot of money but you do need to spend time listening to whatever speakers you can afford because they do sound different between makes and models. Also, listening is very subjective so what sounds good to you may sound terrible to someone else (and vice versa) so get the speakers that sound best to you.

 

Of course it isn't HD quality... that's why it's called ED. And yes, I've read that article before.

But again... I don't fall for the hype machine. Did you read the entire article btw? Did you read the last line :

The fact is that from a viewing distance of 8-12 feet, most people can't tell much difference between ED and HD. Also, a lot of higher end ED sets display SD and DVD signals better than higher priced HD sets. And this is not even getting into the DLP issues with things like the SDE or contrast/black levels.

So, no, I necessarily won't be getting HD for my family room because it's the hot thing right now. That doesn't mean I won't be get getting it, I just won't necessarily be getting it. My projector upstairs, however, will be HD.

 

I don't think anyone in this thread disagrees with those statements. Who said speakers don't make a difference?

 

i wasnt trying to say plasma was crappy (i really have very very limited knowledge on the subject) ive just heard that the others were better for the money. but hey i cant afford any of them and still have my 5 year old rca walmart edition.
