Vengeance and anyone else who is a Firefox expert: Was trying to access ESPN's website this morning, and Mozilla kept crashing. I kept getting this window that says "Feedback to Mozilla" or something like that and the dreaded "Mozilla Firefox.exe has caused a problem and needs to close" (paraphrased). I restarted the computer and even ran SpyBot. After restarting the computer, I went to Amazon and had no problems but still had problems with ESPN's site. I am thinking it has something to do with those blasted pop-up ads that ESPN's site uses - it is a different version or "stronger" than what Firefox is used to blocking. Can anyone help me here or know what is going on with this? Thanks.
I've been having pop-ups start to sneak through Firefox on certain sites recently, and it's starting to annoy me...
Manny: You may need to reinstall your Flash plug-in. It looks like ESPN has a huge amount of Flash content, and that would be my first guess at what is causing your problem. As far as pop-ups go, this is more of a case in webmasters hacking around Firefox's pop-up blocker than a failure of Firefox. If you're still seeing pop-ups, you might want to be a little more careful where you surf , I've NEVER seen a pop-up with Firefox, but I'm sure if these types of pop-ups become more ubiquitous, the Firefox guys will figure out how to detect and stop the pop-up.
I like flashblock , it is a mozilla plugin that stops flash loading and replaces the flash with a "F" icon. Click on the "F" to load the app if you so desire. Handy.
Setting dom.popup_allowed_events = "" in mozilla's about:config file will kill all pop-ups (works for me anyway). This may make a few sites not work as well - but you can adjust that per site when you see the "pop-up has been blocked" notification at the top of the browser.
the exact same thing just happened to me on espn.com . i haven't had the problem on any other site...
I just had the same problem actually -- saw this thread, went to ESPN.com, and it crashed for me as well. Before it did, it told me that shockwave had performed an illegal operation, so I suspect it's to do with that. I will find out more and let you know.
In addition to flashblock (which is a great extension by the way), try using adblock to filter out those annoying pop unders - which is currently how advertisers are circumventing pop up blockers. What is it? Adblock is a content filtering plug-in for the Mozilla and Firefox browsers. It is both more robust and more precise than the built-in image blocker. Adblock allows the user to specify filters, which remove unwanted content based on the source-address. If this sounds complicated, don't worry: it's not. Just add a few filters. Every time a webpage loads, Adblock will intercept and disable the elements matching your filters. http://adblock.mozdev.org/ As far as filters are concerned, try this: http://www.geocities.com/pierceive/adblock/ Filterset G updates his stuff weekly, and he really seems to know what he is doing. Just look for the link entitled "instructions.txt" at the top of the page and go from there. With both extensions going, and in addition to running Fx 1.01, I haven't had any pop ups / unders.
For Windows users- To eliminate the rest of those popups, update your hosts file. It's not a program, and it allows windows to zap unwanted and useless IP addresses.
Man Ram... The general consensus at the Fx forums seems to be that: A. ESPN and their lack of support for alternative browsers; B. Performing a clean Install of Fx 1.0.1 by: 1. Uninstall any previous version(s) of Firefox. In Windows use the Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel. For ZIP builds -- Delete the folder where firefox.exe runs from and also follow the steps below. 2. Create a backup of your Profile. You can simply copy everything to another folder on your hard drive (and this gives Firefox the ability to retrieve your prior settings, bookmarks, etc). 3. Delete your existing profile. 4. Install Firefox 1.0.1 with as little as possible running on your PC. You can reboot your PC so you have a fresh start and don't start any other work until you Install 1.0.1 successfully. 5. Copy key settings back from your prior profiles. From your Backup Profile folder (created in step #2), copy over bookmarks.html, cookies.txt, hostperm.1, key3.db, signon.txt, formhistory.dat and user.js from your backup to your newly created profile. C. Installing adblock extension and use the 2-22-05 Filterset.G This seems to have resolved the issue at hand for everyone. Also, may I suggest using Mozilla Backup program (Mozbackup 1.4). http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail/Mozilla_Backup/1066312445/1
