Now, we have completed trades, and are all set for the 2nd half. With all the role players surrounding them, who do you think is more important to the team success for the season, Yao or Tmac? Can we win games without Yao? Can we win games without Tmac? IMHO, if we can win games even without Tmac, we will be truly at next level and will be competing as well as anybody in the west. This poll is not about who's better player between Tmac and Yao. Yes, I know you may say Sura's the key. Well, just Tmac and Yao

I feel right now Yao is more steady and consistent than TMac! I think something is wrong with TMac, he seems to be hesitating , not real sure with himself and hit shots are off.

Yao keeps improving, you can see it game by game, if it weren't for the r****ded refs, he could have easily won us a few games all by himself!

Rockets needs 111 to win championship. If you take 1 or 11 out of 111, there is no 111 -> no championship! However, if I have to choose, since there are two 1 in 11, I will say 11 is more important. ;)

He was fine until the last two games when he was responsible for handling the ball most of the time. T-Mac needs to get the ball and finish, not bring it up and start the offense. It hurts his whole game.

Right now, T-Mac is simply more important because he could carry this team without Yao. He's done it before and he could do it again. He is a legit MVP candidate almost every year and one of the top 5 players in the NBA.

That isn't to diminish Yao. Being second to McGrady is like being second to Shaq. It isn't an insult to Yao so much as it is a compliment to the other player. Yao does not yet have the ability to carry a team by himself. He needs a dominant second player to make his game go.

    If Success = Championship

    Then, it's Equal.

    Anything less, really isn't success.

If TMac or Yao could win a title by themselves. I ask, why go the harder route? Why make it more difficult? Ego? Why not join forces and win it together? It sure would make things a lot easier.

Yao can't be the man if he doesn't have the stamina to play 35 minutes.

It's great to see Yao and TMac really gelling.

I would say both are important for Rockets to be successful. It's not a question of who's the man on the team. I find a team with two selfless superstars working together is like a breath of fresh air. Magic Johnson and Jabbar is kind of like that.

I would not want to lose any one of these guys, in my mind, they're the heart and soul and the solid foundation of this championship caliber team.

If we have to break it down, IMO TMac is probably as good as he's ever gonna get in terms of physical skills. Yao however still haven't reach his prime yet, there's still a lot more good things ahead if he keep developing. Both of them will start in all star games for years to come.

Even as a Big Yao fan, I don't like this kind of pool. What is the motivation to do this? Did you already forget the latest dominant duo in LA has been separated just because someone wanted to prove more important than the other?

And don't ask this question ever after our Big_Mac bring us a few titles in the future .

(done before?)I think it more depends on CARRY this team to which level. if only playoff, either of them can do that, but to a champ contender, neither can do. we need 111 to do that, a 50/50 share-duty job

    Both.

When was the last time a team without at least 2 all-star caliber players won a Championship? Now before you respond, I'm not saying two all-stars on the team, but two superstars. There is a difference. Last year Detroit had RIP, B. Wallace and R. Wallace, LA had Shaq and Kobe, SA - Duncan and Parker, and before that Duncan and Robinson.

IMO, I'd say Houston's first Championship w/ Akeem but you could easily argue OT or Max were playing all-star caliber that year, before that you'd probably have to go all the way back to the Pistons with Isiah and a bunch of great role players (Dantley, Agguire, Dumars, Spider, Rodman and Laimbeer - as much as I hate him), but to win a Championship it takes several superstars and great role players. Even Jordan couldn't win one until Pippen (can't think of a player I hate more...no, not even the Mailman)evolved.

"The Irreplaceables: Some teams need that one guy"

    12. Tracy McGrady, Houston: T-Mac has loosened up Jeff Van Gundy, keeping Rockets fans awake by limiting those 73-67 doozies to a minimum. His effortless offensive skills bail the Rockets out of lulls, and that task would fall solely on Yao Ming's shoulders if McGrady were out of the mix. Handling the full load is something the talented, yet still developing, big man hasn't been forced to do in his career.

Yao is JUST as important as Tracy. Like Van Gundy said, 2 maybe 3 games may be won in the short-term, but this this team would absolutely not survive without either one for very long. Last season, defenses frustrated Tracy to the point he seriously wanted to "retire" and give up.

If Tracy keeps shooting as bad as he has the past few games (with the exception of the Wizards game), he won't be carrying us anywhere.

These are T-Mac's FGM/A for the past 7 games:

    Spurs 7-21
    Sonics 7-18
    Wizards 14-22
    Blazers 6-19
    Pacers 5-16
    Bulls 7-17
    Lakers 8-24

Minus Yao, we would be last season's Orlando Magic re-incarnated. At the end of the season, we'd be looking at another 21-82 standing. There's a reason Jon Barry called Yao his, "meal ticket".

I feel both are equally important. If we lose either for an extended period of time or in the playoffs then our season is basically over. Although I do feel that T-Mac is more capable of carrying this team more that Yao but it doesn’t matter b/c without Yao we are not going anywhere.

Rob, I agree with most of what you said. Just wanted to point out that the reason that the Magic had a 21 win season was two-fold. TMac's injury and a Magic's team that played very bad defense (and maybe a little bit of a lack of desire from TMac; remember that?).

So, our team would be better than that team just by adding Barry, Sura, Westley, and James. Plus we play a collective defense as well as get Deke interior blocks.

That being said, we'd probably be another 45-48 win team. Not great. But certainly better than 21-61 season. That's why we need Yao to get us over the hump. As does TMac provide for Yao. They *need* each other's help.

I don't think that we can win more than 40 games without Yao.

If you leave either TMac or Yao out of the picture, this team can barely win 30 games in the tough West.

Team-record-wise, Tmac's achievement is probably less than
Francis. 40 wins in the East means nothing. I dont think Tmac
was a legit MVP candidate in the last several years. In his best
year (02 - 03), his team was the 8th seed with 38 wins, while
we missed the playoff with 43 wins.

I dont think this team minus Yao can win 35 games in the West.
I also dont think this team minus Tmac can win 35 games.
In fact, this team may not win 35 games without Sura, even
Yao + Tmac are not enough.

So now we are talking one of them as MVP of the team when
neither of them is good enough to carry a quality team alone?
Tmac is better than Yao right now, but he's not the MVP.
From my observation, he's still a notch below Kobe, and Yao
is about two notches below an aging Shaq.
