It's always nice to see players contributing to charity.. the community etc. Yao seems like the type guy who is probably involved in a lot of things, but the fact that many are probably in China keeps us from hearing about them. I'm just curious as to what kinds of things he does charity wise. Maybe the Chinese posters can help me out.
I remember something was said that he donated money to the medical communities during the SARS outbreak in China. He also donates alot money periodically to the charity organizations called the Chinese government and Shanghai Sharks...
Oh, Yao has always been very very generous toward the IRS, which is a US charity organization, just in case you don't know.
I heard he donated the $1.5mil preceed of his book to some US charities. Not too bad, he gets to tax deductions too.
He donated 20k to pay for the medical bill to a kid who is a big fan of him and also who sufferd from leukemia. Unfortunately, the kid finally passed away.
Good to hear. I ask because players here get credit for helping out their community, but a lot of Yao's is probably not known to most Houston fans since much of it is probably in China. The guy just seems like a nice guy. At first it was a little hard to get to know him because of the language difference, but the more he talks in english the more he just comes across as the type guy who probalby helps out his community a lot etc.

That was in Jan 2004, the boy's name is Yang Luo. He was a Yao's Fan.When he contacted with Yao through a newspaper, he had just finished his transplant-operation.But the operation was not very successful. The boy's biggest dream was to talk with Yao. Yao called the boy an hour later after the newspaper got to contect with Yao' s agent. Next several weeks, Yao asked the boy from time to time, and sent medicines and money to the boy from US. But this could not save the boy. That's all i know about the story. Pls forgive my poor English.
